First of all, i greatly appreciate any replies to my posts and hope nobody minds me posting my humble bits/pieces here, i realise that lots of you are aircraft owners/pilots/restores etc and have far more knowledge about all things aeronautical than i will ever have!
I purchased a couple of tatty air raid spotters note books for 1944 recently, they seem to have been used by a youngster who lived in Colchester and contain along with the usual three view silhouettes a few unfortunatly not very detailed, messy, muddled entries! There is a list of what look like possible aircraft identification letters e.g=
K LM. B HV. O UN. (No actual serials), Reading through Roger Freemans book ” Thunderbolt, A documentary history of the Republic P47″ Is it possible these are codes from the 56 fighter group? The air fields mentioned in the spotter book are Boxted, Langham, Wormingford and Earles Colne. If not USAAF, could they be RAF?…..poss not planes at all of course!

Codes
Im afraid there are no clues as to where these codes were taken….i suppose as he hasn’t written any serials, perhaps he took them from flying Thunderbolts..
I have looked through both books but cannot find a date as to when they were published..I think both in 1944, pre June as, on the last page of the later one, he has written very large and underlined, ” JUNE 6th 1944 SECOND FRONT OPENED. plus some basic stats he must have read or got from radio i suppose, such as, “13,000 sorties flown on June 6th”, “british battleships, Warspite,Nelson and Ramilles in action also American battleships, Texas,Arkansas, and Nevarda (June 7th)” etc….The earliest date in the earlier book he has written is, Sunday 20 February 1944, he writes, “STIRLING SEEN TOWING HORSA GLIDER”
Here is the full list of codes from the later book= K-LM. Z-LM. S-LM. H-LM. X-LM. (written twice?) P-LM. Y-LM. G-LM. K-LM. Q-LM. M-LM. V-LM. Y-UN. L-UN. R-UN. H-UN. X-UN. L-UN. M-UN. C-UN. F-UN. K-UN. B-UN. O-UN. T-UN. B-UN. (Again!) B-HV. G-HV. O-HV. X-HV. G-HV.(Repeat!?) H-HV. T-HV. C-HV. P-HV. V-HV. F-HV. I dont expect anyone to post all identities here!…just for interest…..Just thought, he has listed them in three columns so perhaps they are three days worth?…..

Thanks for that! been having a look on web and yes! they do appear to be 56 fighter group codes! (Found an amazing sight-“Little Friends”, hundreds of photos plus tons of aircraft details) IF ONLY THAT YOUNGSTER HAD WRITTEN DOWN SERIALS!!!!!!!!

Blimey! If only I had a Tardis (preferably with Amy Pond on board)
I reckon spotting was a worthwhile pastime back then.

A few possibilities..
Capt. Praeger Neyland, Kennedy, TX. 61st Fighter Squadron. P-47D 42-75508.HV-B_ “Pistol Packin’ Mama”.
Maj. Michael B Quirk, Washington, DC. 62nd Fighter Squadron. P-47D 42-75242 LM-K.
Lt. Wayne J O’Connor, 63rd Fighter Squadron. P-47C 41-6216 UN-O. No name on a/c but imposing artwork of the Big Bad Wolf.
Shamelessly Googled!!!

Hi,
This would indeed be the 56th Fighter Group. HV was the codes for the 61st Fighter Squadron of the 56th Fighter Group, LM was the 62nd and UN the 63rd.
The preceding letters are indivdual aircraft call signs. I’ll check my references to see which aircraft these were…
