"Ramjet AMRAAMS in Desert Storm"

LAST EDITED ON 17-Dec-00 AT 10:52 PM (GMT)[p]A few people have spoke about this in another thread. This was in the 27th October 1999 issue of Janes Defense Weekly.Quite an interesting article.I’ll summarise a bit.
JDW has learned that a highly classified USAF missile system was secretely and successfully test fired during the 90-91 Gulf War.A squadron Of USAF F-15C were deployed during the 90-91 Gulf War,with a ramjet powered variant of Raytheon AMRAAM and were responsible for a number of Iraqi combat aircraft kills. These kills were later described as “successful engagements by other non-classified missile systems”.According to US Military sources these weapons were supplied in “quantity” even though they were officially only “test items”. The original Gulf War version was quite crude with box like external ramjets,it supposedly has been refined under a number of “feeder” projects using ramjets developed by US missile specialist ARC. ARC has since been working on a variable-flow ductless ramjet motor with would allow advanced deriatives to fit into the F-22’s and JSF’s weapons bay. It also states the point that the first “official” AMRAAM kill was not until 2 years after DS,when a F-16C shot down an Iraqi Mig-25 Foxbat using an AMRAAM on 27/12/1992
