Ran across an Interesting documentary on YouTube

So I was trollling through YouTube looking for something to wind down with before bed last night, and came across a documentary called “Spitfire: Birth Of A Legend.” The documentary itself was relatively pedestrian, although the interviews with RAF and Luftwaffe vets were interesing. It focused primarily on the Battle of Britain, but what really caught my eye was the fact that it featured as much as 15 minutes of footage obviously shot for the 1968 film that I had never seen. I don’t know if it was footage cut from the final release, or simply unused outtakes. In any case, there were some really great clips, iincluding a lot of stuff with Buchons and CASAs..some much more dramatic than what ended up in the final film. I had no idea there was that much unused footage from the film still rattling about. It’s definitely worth seeking out for BoB fans.

Ah, the power of YouTube and freeze frame.

Here after 50 years of collating unit codes of the Spitfires used in the BoB film, a new one to add to the database. Airworthy Mk IX MK297 DO-R.

Recognition points are – Distinctive white patch on top cowling, distinctive black mark on air intake cowling, four blade propeller and turning, four aperture wheels, fish tail exhausts with mixture issue white staining.

Taxiing Mk XVI SM411 also carried the DO-R codes.

Many thanks for posting.

Dark Blue World used cutting room floor BoB film excerpts which, imho, are better than those that made it to the final cut. Some was drama documentary realism style
