A NAVY diver is undergoing emergency surgery after losing a hand and part of a leg in a shark attack in Sydney Harbour early this morning.
The 31-year-old man was attacked just before 7am (AEDT). The incident happened near Garden Island Naval Base, at Wolloomooloo Bay, in Sydney’s inner east.
The diver was rushed to nearby St Vincent’s Hospital where a spokesman said the victim was undergoing surgery but he could not confirm his condition.
“He’s up in surgery at the moment,” the spokesman said.
“The fact that he has been rushed into surgery indicates that it is quite serious.”
A defence department spokesman said it was not yet known whether the diver was taking part in the Kondari Trial, a test of new technologies to protect ports and ships from terrorist attack, which began on Monday.

There has been a huge effort to clean up harbor in syd over last 20 years, stormwater drains laws, sewers and treatment plants, tough regulations on oil and chemical pollution and so on…downside if you can call it that is that new clean harbor is haven for fish, who attract bigger fish, who attract sharks.. there is a huge population of Bull sharks there, and they will bite anything. It gets more dangerous at night when i think the poor fella was attacked.

Looks like that diver had not been paying sufficient attention to the local terrorists that are present right around the Australian coastline. (Noahs)

“Technologies being tested during the trial include diver detection sonar, underwater warning systems, imaging sonar, Remotely Operated Vehicles and Autonomous Underwater Vehicles used for hull, pier and seabed searches.”
Looks like they are testing intergrated detection and warning system against any would be attacker, be it diver or surface craft such as jet ski or speedboat
thanks for the article
