I’m still working through the hundred’s of photographs from my recent trip to California, and have come across some preserved/historic/interesting aircraft seen inbetween visiting the major museums.
I’ll post some on this thread with details of where they are.
First five are from the Blackbird Air Park, close to Palmdale.
Not every day you see two Blackbirds together now!

Can’t disagree with that Steve – lucky blighter !

Yep, Lynne was fine with the aviation side of the trip, so long as we visited National Parks on the way too.
She knew nothing about planes and flying when we first met. Now 11 years later, she has built her own R/C plane and learned to fly it, co-piloted my B-17, and flown my P-47!
Yes, I’m very lucky!

Laviticus.
I have it on good authority that we covered 1400 miles in just under 2 weeks!
Just glad I wasn’t driving !
Some nice pics there……but only 1400miles! you can’t have been really trying!!
I managed over 6000mls driving in three weeks on my honeymoon. A trip planned around aircraft museums and national parks! We also managed to get to California to see Planes of Fame, but also got to visit Hill AFB, Castle AFB, March AFB, Pima & Davis Monthan, ‘Spruce Goose’ & Evergreen Museum, Boeing Factory & Museum of Flight in Seattle to name a few.
It’s a shame that due to the distances, most American aviation enthusiasts are less likely to see all that is on display in their own country. It just takes an English nutter who decides to ‘DO’ America in three weeks! ( well, 9 States of it anyway )

We made it as far as San Fransico and the USS Hornet, then flew back to LAX and on to Heathrow.
I think I visited more museums in Calif. than I’ve been to in the UK!
Will be putting up some shots from Castle soon.

We covered 20 or so museums and airfields, along with the Planes Of Fame airshow, had great weather on the whole, and good company, which all added up to a superb holiday.
Thanks for the link also, makes interesting reading.

Sequoia airfield.
Last batch for now, the two water-bombers parked up on the airfield.
The DC-4 looked stunning sat in the late afternoon sunshine.

American Veterans Memorial, Tulare.
Shots of the F-4 and B-17G on show at the side of the road.
I was told that the B-17 was hit by a truck a few years ago and had to be extensively rebuilt. Must admit that the rear fuselage did not look quite right around the access door.
Anyone know any more about this?

California City airport.
Dropped in to get a shot of the Convair, and copped the others as well.

Mojave Airport.
Amazing what you can find while wandering around an airport in the USA.
A few classic jets and (I believe) a real-live Zero – anyone know which one/whose this is?

Dave,
There is a U-2/TR-1 (couldn’t tell which) parked between the two Blackbirds, and there is also one of the experimental drones used on the Blackbirds.
Unfortunately the museum was closed when we turned up, so I had to take all the photo’s through the fence, and the one I got of the U-2 is not that great.

City of Lancaster.
A couple of types found on plinths in Lancaster, which is not far (in USA terms!) from Edwards AFB.
The Hornet is outside the Clear Channel Stadium, and the Phantom is at a road junction not far from the centre of the city.
Thanks to our ‘navigator’ for finding these for us, as I know he lurks here regularly!!

Milestones Of Flight Museum.
A small museum located at Fox Field, and not where I expected to come across an Argosy !
