I was wondering how much range does increase when a plane drops its external tanks when they are empty as compared to when they carry them until landing.
I suppose modern fuel tanks are very expensive, but are they planned to be dropped in case of dangerous wartime missions or are they supposed to be carried throught unless a case of real emergency?
