I was idlely chatting at work the other day when the topic turned to aircraft and the complex millitary types. This reminded me of a conversation i had with an officer in the officers mess at Insworth when I was about 15. This conversation centered on the RAF`s policy of only allowing “officers” to become pilots and only those generally with a degree.
My main question was how do you replace pilots at a rapid enough rate during an all out war if you sustain heavy losses? Could a modern figther plane be flown as an effective weapons platform with a naturally gifted pilot with inferior knowledge of technologies or is it the weapons technology which is more important.Would this scenario give rise to more two seat fighters where there is a trained and dedicated pilot iin the front and a weapons operater in the rear .Obviously these planes exist but would we see a rise in numbers .
How long would it take to train someone to become a pilot “only” of a modern fighter compared with that of “total” training in all it’s systems?
