Rare fotoshoot opportunity

Some beautiful shots of some indeed rare birds. Great job!

One regret, they couldn’t park them somewhere that they could be shot without all the JUNK in the background! That is one of my pet peaves. Just can’t shoot without there being 132 other photographers swarming the thing, or a bunch of junk in the back mucking up the shot. I know, beggers can’t be choosers, but in a perfect world…

Isn’t that Fury beautiful?? Now, what do we all need to do to persuade them to get it back into the air and onto the airshow circuit??

Wait….. It won’t be long before a real Hawker Fury emerges from the Aero Vintage/Historic Aircraft Collection workshops. G-BKBB is a replica.

As for the Viima, it was once G-BAAY based in the UK and played the part of the dastardly Hun’s red aircraft in ‘Aces High’ (1976). It would be fab to see it here again.

Yes TT. The Fury is still airworthy and made it’s last flight th 2003.

And to Arm Waver; I knew you would spot the Viima. Yes, she looks great now. We nicely cleaned this machine recently. Not a spot of dirt remains on the fuselage of this plane.

Thanks for sharing the amazing photos, out of the 3 aircraft Ive seen a Fury before but not the other two. One question though, why has the Viima got what look like Blue Swatikas on it? Bex

The Finnish Air Force swastika is originally from Sweden. Swedish Count Eric von Rosen donated the first aircraft to Finnish army in 1918 (Thulin Parasol), long before nazis used it. The swastika was von Rosen’s symbol of luck.

I belive that the Viima VI-3 was named “Haijala” after a 1930’s FAF pilot, when was the name removed from the aircraft?

The Latvians also used the Swastika, but it was red and sat on one leg.

Cheers Cking, I knew that Uncle Adolf borrowed the Swastika, but for all my reading of Military History I had no idea the Finns used it too. Hmm better bury the old noggin back in the books LoL. Bex

And the last rare bird was the unique airworty Valtion Viima which last flew in 2004 and made it’s only public appearance since then.

Our team was very happy to see many spotters on the occassion and we may repeat this event next year. We also think about flying some of our machines then.

Another rare view at the occasion was this Hawker Fury G-BKBB which made it’s first public appearance in Belgium in more than 10 years.

The Fury was moved to another hanger today to clean it and do the required maintenance work to keep this machine airworthy. It will not be flown in the near future, but there may be some engine tests during the maintenance program.

It felt good to see this plane outside the hangar. 🙂
