RareBear expert needed

Hello

My Name is Kevin and I´m a scale modeler from Germany. I have planned to build the RareBear in differend color schemes that appeared over the years. The 1985 version is already finished, the 1999 version with the hulking three-bladed prop is actually under construction.

When it is finished, I´ve planned to build the desert wreck which was bought by Lyle Shelton in 1969 and restored to become a raceplane. I think it is an important part of my cronological collection because the wreck is the beginning point of the racing history of the “Bear”.

To complete the model I need to know some information on this wreck. On the Internet I have only found one pic of the wreck on the RareBear homepage. Two other pics were sent to me via e-mail, so I have enough basic information to recreate the damaged areas of the fuselage and wings.

My only problem is to find information about the paintjob of the plane. The three pics I have are not colored. Is here anybody who can help me to get the information I need? The registration number of the plane was N1031B and it crashed during a landing in Indiana. After the crash it was left for a few years in a corn field next to the runway. When Shelton bought it, the plane was carried to Orange County for rebuilding.

I have searched for information until my fingers were bleeding, this forum is my last hope to get the needed facts. I would be more than happy if someone could help me to find the right colors. Maybe someone lived in that area at that time and remembers the plane or knows someone who was involved in the restoration.

Cheers,
Kevin

This is the wreck(pic is from the RareBear hompage)

Careful with that link. Every time I click on the photo gallery my anti virus kicks in.

Yeah, that’s the only problem with the site lately and I think it has something to do with the server. It’s a great site and I know the webmaster personally so post with confidence if you wander on over.
Stuntman Mike, I posted the Key Publishing link with the pictures of your models over on the Racer Scale Modeling forum, so if you want, come on over and discuss all things racers.
Also, here’s a video I just put together of the Unlimited Gold heat race from Friday 9/12/08 http://www.vimeo.com/4205060 the video is kind of jerky when played on the websites flash player, so I suggest you download it and play it using something like Real Player.

I might as well help with the advice. At WWW.WARBIRDAEROPRESS.COM
The son of LYLE SHELTON posts as “BellCobraIV”. He is a fountain of air race information esp. the RAREBEAR. There was also a book about the history of the RAREBEAR released.

Hi guys

Thanks for the info. Seems like I´m getting closer and closer to the goal. A good feeling after 18 month of exhausting search with no results. Really cool.

[QUOTE=Cking;1395805]

Hi Folks

If someone here is registered at the “Warbirds Information Exchange Site”, I´d be very happy if that person could ask there for me. I don´t want to register in 1001 platforms to ask just one question. If you can help me: YOU DA MAN:cool:

I WOULD recomend you join WIX. Firstly they are the experts on all things obscure and American.
Secondly they would love to see your models.

Rgds Cking

P.S. I like the sound of you project, may we see the rest of the models when you have finished?

Hi Cking

I should take a deeper look into the WIX. Maybe it could be interesting for future projects.

You´d like to see some more models? No problem. I´ll start a new thread in the model kit area. I have some race´n´record planes already finished and some other under construction.

🙂

Hi Folks

Thanks for the fast answers. I have sent an email to the homepage two weeks ago but they haven´t answered yet. I´ve really turned the Internet inside out. I´m looking for this information for about one and a half year…:D

I also have contacted John Penney(the RareBear-Pilot himself) and he does not know anything about the original paintjob… He´s the one who sent me the other two pictures of the wreck but he couldn´t help me with the colors. He joined the team years after the plane had been restored. I don´t want to ask him a thousand questions, I bet he has more important things to do than looking around for information to make scale modelers happy.

A few days ago I have ordered the book “Racing for the gold – The story of Lyle Shelton and the RareBear”. I hope there´s some helpful information inside.

I´m a patient guy…it just takes some time and everything will be fine…hopefully…:o

Cheers:)

PPS:
If someone is interested…this is the finished 1985 version of the “Bear”. A great kit to build – very challenging but drop dead beautyful when finished. Hope you like it:
