Raw Film Footage of the Finnish Air Force at War

I was informed that the National Defence University’s Department of Military History has released a DVD containing what seems like all the raw, silent footage of the Finnish Air Force shot during the Continuation War. The box contains two DVD containing total of 5 hours 29 minutes of footage. The name of the box is “Jatkosota ilmassa: suomalaisissa TK-filmeissä”. To the best of my knowledge, the box cannot be bought from any store but has to be ordered from the Department.

I loaned my copy from the National Defence University’s library located in Helsinki. A lot of the material is really nice, but there are also tens of seconds of blurry material between the shots. However, this is what one would expect from unedited material. There are also a lot of authentical material shot during actual combat missions, e.g. during a German Stuka raid to Ihantala in 1944. Other material include 20 minutes of simulated aerial combat between a captured I-153 and Fokker D.XXIs, supply flights with Douglas DC-2, bombing missions with Bristol Blenheim etc.

I can only recommend to obtain a copy and see the material yourself!

I went through all the material once again and noticed there’s some footage on the assembly of the license build Blenheims at the State Aircraft Factory at Tampere in 1942.

Didn’t know the Finnish/Swedish Gladiators had those armoured seats!

Yes, I believe Finnish Gladiators were equipped with armoured seats taken from crashed Soviet aeroplanes during the Winter War.

If you look elsewhere on these Forums you will know that we too are occasionally plagued with copyright issues.

What I have now learned from various sources is that the DVDs are not going to be ever sold in stores due to the copyrights. Fortunately the Finnish Copyright Law allows one to copy DVDs for personal use or have them copied by a third party.

Was there ever a more enthralling, wholly admirable and heart warming story than the example of Finland’s determination to resist the overwhelming numbers of Russians both on the ground and in the air attempting to enslave Finland during the Winter War.

A true account of David v Goliath and it did not entirely go Goliath’s way. I’ve had a huge soft spot for the Finns ever since. They made the Russians pay for their un-necessary aggression.

A bit of a teaser; Blenheims attacking Soviet shipping of the coast of the Karelian Isthmus on 16 June 1944.
