RC Airplanes

Anyone here fly RC airplanes much? I’m thinking about getting into something, but I’m not sure where to start. I know it can be an expensive hobby so I’m not looking for something that’s reasonable priced and that requires little maintenance. Any suggestions?

I’ve flown the little helicopters that Air Hogs produces and they are quite enjoyable, so I was thinking of going up to the next level and getting some airplane for flying around in a big field or something.

Having not flown model aircraft for about 40 years I got a the new RTF electric B17 from Remote Island and I have flown it a couple of times since Christmas, weather conditions having not been that clement!!

It is lightweight and has suffered wing tip damage – my fault due to flying in too windy conditions – but they are easily repaired with the supplied adhesive. I am look forward to flying it this weekend – wind and weather permitting.

Parkzone was tempting but a little more expensive so I think I might get the Remote Island Mustang next and once I feel comfortable with these two, move up to Parkzone.

Hope that helps.

To whet your appetite, this is my Spitfire after a repaint:

Over on the Squadron Leader forum (www.squadronleader.co.uk) there are guys who’ve done all kinds of things to their models – including one chap who’s fitted CONTRA-PROPS to a substantially modified Spit! It looks brilliant.

Before this thread disappears into the models forum (where I rarely go these days), I just want to say one word:

Parkzone.

They do some really nice RC models, made of lightweight but pretty durable poly-foam. They do a bit of everything from beginners’ models to some seriously nice miniature scale warbirds (I have the Spitfire, though seldom-flown).

Electric-powered, and basically everything you need to get you started is in the box. The Spit retails around the £120 mark, depending on your stockist.
