RCAF Dak KG455

Does anyone know much about this RCAF Dak KG455 12924..She has been located at CFB Petawawa Ontario for a few years now, just outside their Military Museum. The camo paint is starting to fade abit and the RCAF Red colours are starting to be visible on the wing tips..

I also noticed that she appears to have two astrodome locations on top of the fuselage…has anyone seen that used before on the Daks.

Also what is the device that appears to draw in fresh air into the exhaust pipes..I have seen it on other radials but not sure about it’s use..

Does anyone have any history on this particular airframe? WWII and post war…

I have never seen any Dak’s at CFS Mountainview in the past twenty years that I have been visiting there.

Were they sold by crown assets?

None of which helps with the current locations of the three Dakotas held by the AMDU in 1990/91…;)

I thought that they where storing some spare CF-18 airframes from when they reduced the operational fleet a few years ago. I know there is a CC-115 Buffalo inside and also a a number CT-114 tutor airframes scattered around the hangers inside and out. Not sure what else.

Some aircadet gliders too.

I do have some pictures in one of my webshots albums from when I was at Mountainview last June.

Mike,

I guess no more DAK’s will be found at Mountainview today?

Are there any other airframes other than the CT-133, CF-5 and Tutors in storage at Mountainview?

Me again,

AMDU was orginally the Aerospace Maintence and Development Unit, originally #6 Repair Depot but is now ATESS – Aerospace and Telecommunications Engineering Support Squadron.

The military do love to confuse us with their Acronyms…

Just a quick question? what does AMDU mean?

I also have it as the Aircraft Maintenance and Disposal Unit, based at Trenton and/or Mountain View, where CF105s and CF5, and probably everything else, etc, goes for disposal.
Take your pick when you discover what happened to the stored airframes…

I have a copy of The Aviation Hobby Shops Military Aircraft Serials of North America (dated November 1991) which lists the following:-
12907 – stored AMDU
12933 – stored AMDU
12937 – to N400BF
12938 – to N21BF
12944 – pres’d Comox as FZ671
12949 – pres’d Winnipeg
12950 – stored AMDU
12957 – to N29BF
12959 – pres’d Cold Lake
12963 – pres’d Trenton as FZ658
KN451 – pres’d Rockcliffe

Assuming that KN451 was preserved before its serial could be changed in 1970 (?) and all the others have last noted dates between 6/90 and 6/91, were these the last Dakotas in Canadian service (and some of their fates)?

I was reading an old article last night about the RCAF Daks in the late 80’s and it mentioned that they had about 9 left in service at that time….

Does anyone have any information on which Daks were the last ones to retire in the RCAF? and what their fate was?

Thanks Spookyboss – the twin astrodome mod has had us guessing. I assume that it’s only possible on birds that haven’t had the bulkhead moved and the extra row of seats and window added?

Ref the heater – should that be WHEN it works, it works very nicely? 🙂 It’s just that one of the pilots doing a conversion course a few weeks ago here suffered a non functioning heater and was complaining bitterly.. Luckily not our aeroplane!

It could be an early Gatwick… Was easier to get around and view by all accounts…
My dad has one or two photos from there including a Canadian C-130 IIRC.
Types could well be a VC-10 and some Britannias…

1. the fresh air tube around the exhaust brings in the warm air and I caan tell you it works very nicely.
2. the circles on top the fuselage are covered over astrodomes, post WWII mode to teach navigators.
Goony birds ROCK !

Thank you Flood. Unfortunately the original is not much better quality. It does say Royal Canadian Air Force on the aircraft. Luckily the serials are written on the back, but no date or location. Any guesses at the aircraft in the background.

All I can tell you – thanks to Air Britains RAF Aircraft KA100-KZ999 – is that they both went to Canada in 1946. Obviously your original is of better quality than what we can see here, if you can see serials; I think it says Royal Canadian Air Force along the fuselarge sides!;)
