Hello folks – just wondering did I hear that she was going to Classic Air Force, Newquay or did I completely make that up?

Shackleton WR963 – Shackleton Preservation Trust.
Nimrod XV232 – Air Atlantique
DC6 (G-SIXC) Diner – Coventry Airport
We (SPT) never intended for WR963 to move if the airport were happy for her to stay. It serves our purpose better for the moment that she stay in Coventry as there are less logistical issues for us.
We have been asked to look after the Nimrod alongside our Shackleton as the move was rumoured to cost around £750k for it to go south – and after the support we have had over the years from Air Atlantique as a whole it seemed churlish and slightly wrong to refuse doing them and preservation a good turn.
I understand the DC6 Diner is now airport owned/run and will be staying, though may move position slightly if some of the redevelopments encroach on it.

re;
I’m puzzled – who does own the Shackleton and Nimrod then?
By: pagen01 - 30th January 2013 at 21:55
That would be the easiest and best solution, both for the airframe and visitors.
It would be missed on the RAF gate though, its been there for almost 25 years, and how long will CAF be on site?

Airbase / Classic Flight don’t own the Shackleton or Nimrod at Coventry -therefore they stay at Coventry. The Duxford Shackleton wasn’t on last years disposal list so rumours are just that. There is no firm basis to suggest its going anywhere. Working on a best possible senario – the example at St Mawgan would be the cheapest to move and I am sure if it was suggested
that it could be housed undercover I think many including the RAF would be in favour.

re;
sorry I meant DC6.
So the owners (airbase) move out and the shack stays??? but there are rumours they are getting the Duxford one? That doesn’t make sense!

The Coventry’s Shackleton is staying -Rich can give you more on that. The Nimrods were not massively expensive when you look at the price of scrap metal -10K ish springs to mind. There is no DC-4 at Coventry -there is a DC-6 restaurant which I guess will continue to cook!

re;
what will be happening to the White one at Coventry? Along with the DC4 and Nimrod (which must have cost them a fortune) ?

This thread started about moving a Shackleton to Airbase at St Mawgan, just think it a waste of time and money with a suitable airframe already on site, better to spend on saving and relocating other airframes.
I suppose it could be argued for any Shackleton joining the collection that it woud be publicly accessable, where as if WL795 remains as an RAF gate guard it won’t be. I guess moving a Shack to Cornwall is a hypothetical argument anyway.
The museum is located here, http://www.flashearth.com/?lat=50.436894&lon=-4.996443&z=16.5&r=0&src=msl
If you scroll along to the west you will see the Shack on the gate.

Can anybody answer two question
1) what if any RAF present is there at St Mawgan today ?
2) where will Airbase be located on the base and what access does the collection have ?
http://www.raf.mod.uk/rafstmawgan/
Airbase will be in our old Nimrod HMF hangar 404, the old VAHS building & the old 1sqn MT hangar. all of which is on the ‘other’ side of the fence & not actually on RAF St Mawgan at all, but part of NCA.
AFAIK, Airbase is not set up yet, in fact far from it, give it time I guess, access will be off the new ‘Aerohub’ road.

The collection must have pretty good access as it opens to the public in a few months time!

It still is the main gate, RAF St Mawgan is still going strong! & 795 is very well cared for by the Cornish Aviation Society
Not suggesting that the St Mawgan gate guard was in anyway uncared for, glad to hear a local group has been allowed to look after her whilst on MOD property. What became of the one Atlantique flew to the US back in the last century?

David,
Haven’t had a wander over to the ‘dump’ for a while now so not sure of the current condition of G-JETP, but on last evidence also looking like one that has a less than rosy future. Will be back on the Island in a couple of weeks time and can provide a pic is desired.

I don’t suppose the JP is looking too fresh now either?

The Cyprus Shacks are 10 minutes down the road from me. A couple of pics of ‘747 and ‘757 from late last year, looking faded and forlorn. Also parked up behind them is a Dassault Flamant.

The Norfolk Shack was sadly less lucky and was chopped rather than dismantled. Apparently all the parts are still about (or were last year) but are scattered about and unlikely to go back together.

But why dont they just take care of the one that guards the former main gate ? I am not sure where the new museum is located but could the Shackleton not be moved to within the collection museum area ?
It was a big enough job moving it from where the museum is now located, see post#29 here, http://forum.keypublishing.com/showthread.php?t=80495 😀
As the good Dr says, it is as well cared for as it can be by the established crew. 🙂
