Really, no, no REALLY Authentic Warbird Schemes

From the Crystal Lakes thread:

Wonder if anyone can point out a recreated scheme on a flying warbird that is TOTALLY accurate? You know, paint scuffs, mud on the wing walks, cordite trails over the wings, chips and dings…. 😉

I’ve got 1 almost contender, but I’m reserving bids ’till later.

Your challenge for the weekend…

[QUOTE=topgun regect]the BBMF MkII Spitfire P7350 still has the wartime repair patches on it from bullet holes IIRC Does that count?[/QUOTE

I seem to remember that these were replaced during a major overhaul

Tallichet’s B-17 before its recent refinish was splendidly ratty

Does it still have it’s ‘Belle’ markings or has it a new scheme?

One of the Mustangs that was at RIAT this year (bit of a brainfade, can’t remember which one) was in bare metal, not polished with suitable stains, weathering on the exhausts, etc. I was lead to believe that this scheme was as authentic as they guys could make it! (obviously no cordite stains though!)

PS, if you want authentic jet warbird schemes, WV372 wears pukka 2 Sqn markings (hi-gloss), and WV318 is in (to the best of my knowledge) authentic 111 Sqn Black Arrows markings.

*Sigh*

AFAK, there is the REPLICA Me262 flying. That’s not original and that’s it. The point is it is there are loads of W.W.II a/c actually in their original paint, looking like the did in service too; but we are looking at FLYERS.

Grounded? Loads. I believe the E28/39 at the Science Museum is wearing its W.W.II paint, and the Meteor prototype at Cosford has been refurbished, but has some (less that it appears I think) original W.W.II paint, and I can’t speak for the Bell /c in the States.

No kill laddie. 😉

Always welcome Mike, unless SPECIFICALLY barred!! 😉

Jets is fine folks. However, I think we are all really interested in W.W.II, in which case they don’t count.

There’s a load of W.W.II a/c in their actual W.W.II paint in museums. The criteria are FLYING warbirds; and I don’t think any fliers are in their original paint (extra points). Good try, nil points.

Kennet’s Jet Provost T.1 G-AOBU was initially flown in its original Hunting-Percival paint, or doesn’t that count?

Hmmm. I’d agree N17W was very impressive over here. It’s interesting that film ccolours though somethimes overdone (Pearl Harbor Spitfires!?!) are often very credible (Piece of Cake, Battle of Britain (tone set by the radio contol modellers) Memphis Belle (II) and so on…

Hello James–

I’d go with Shuttleworth’s Spit V too. Over here, there was one particular P-51 that had “that” look (although the code letters were wrong). I refer to Dave Tallichet’s D model, N3333E “Dixie”. Except for the civil reg and the fact that her codes were “YC” instead of the correct “CY” (343FS/55FG), that Mustang was like stepping into a vintage Kodachrome…Tallichet’s B-17 before its recent refinish was splendidly ratty too as was Bob Richardson’s F model N17W (both in “Memphis Belle” film paint); and of course there’s Lex DuPont’s blotchy and peeling FM-2…

Cheers

Snap. AR501 has always been my fave. However, no gun panel wear, no cordite, no use of the radio hatch and resultant wear, modern footprint treads rather than 1943 pattern treads (OK, I jest)

“Half a kill laddie, half a kill.” 😉

AR501 also has her IFF aerials! BM597 is cool too!

**** Hansen’s P-40 in the flat scheme, VERY close to what they would’ve looked like at Pearl on a certain sunday.
The CAF’s Corsair, painted up as M.O. Chance’s aircraft, glossy just as they would’ve been at that time of the war for speed and ease of maintenance.
