Recent fighter developments-the wrong way ?

In the light of the latest developments in Afganistan, Irak, possible interventions in Afrika, I asked myself, if we (NATO members) invest in the right aircraft.

We see new jets with low bypass jetengines, optimized for supercruise. So far so good, but what we need in the recent conflicts are CAS aircraft, with long loiter time. The US is about to get the Raptor operational, some European nations Typhoon or Rafale.
For other nations JSF is in the pipe. Once again a fast jet. With all the fency gimmicks of a modern multirole fighter and the associated costs.
For most NATO members those new tactical multirole fighters are the most expansive procurement programmes ever-while forces in Afganistan complain about the lack of proper CAS.
Even after all those new toys are operational in numbers, they don’t fit the bill.

There are some UCAV programmes circling around-but I got the impression, there is no real desire to get such platforms fast into service-while money flows in mentioned fast jets.

Are those the right priorities ? Comments welcome. 😉
