After a long overdue trip to Shuttleworth today I fancy having a go at some WWI aircraft kits and I’d like to start with the SE5A. Accuracy is reasonably important but I’m after a kit that goes together relatively easily without too much additional hacking and trimming! 1/72 is probably too fiddly so 1/48 or 1/32 scales preferred.
Any recommendations?

The Hasagawa one is beautiful – I’ve lusted lustfully after that for long long time! It was one of the reasons I ended up with the Alby because it was available (got it cheap from Ebay) and the SE wasn’t.

In case you are unaware the company is owned by Peter Jackson the film producer of the Lord of the Rings series.. He is a ww1 nut and also owns the company building the full size flying ones..
You can find more here

The other one I was going to suggest was the ( and I think they do it ) was the Hasegawa 1/8th museum quality kit, they come up every now and then on evil bay. With these ww1 kits the 1/32 will be quite small when you compare it to other kits

Thanks Tony, that’s the one I’ve ordered. They have a cracking website, it’s nice to be able to check out the instructions in advance.

Thanks guys,
John, complicated is ok, I’m fine with fiddly but I just want to avoid older kits that often don’t go together so well. Those Model Airways kits look fantastic but a little over my budget.
I’ve done a little research online and decided to go for 1:32 scale which will be a complete change for me. Roden seem to get very good reviews as do a new (to me at least) manufacturer Wingnut Wings and I’ve just ordered their kit.
Cheers,
Bruce

A Company called “RODEN” produce kits of the SE.5A in both 1;48 and 1:32 scales.
Both are currently available by mail order from HANNANTS.

Hasagawa used to do a marvellous Se5a but that falls into the complicated category! I think Eduard do a range of 1/48 and maybe 1/32 WW1 models.
I have the Model Airways Albatros DV to make but I will have to wait a bit to start I think.
