Red Arrows Down to Seven?

Sad to read BBC report that RAF Red Arrow display team will reduce to 7 aircraft for 2012 season.

Sad too to hear that Flt Lt Kirsty Stewart is leaving the team.A true professional and very good person.

Tedious

These RAFAT threads can be tedious, founded on rumour and hear say.
Can we stick to the facts?
ALL Reds pilots go through a STRICT regime to ensure suitability, regardless of gender, race, sexuality etc. There will be inevitably some “firsts”, as with Kirsty.
The team manager (Red 10) is chosen for his managerial qualities and lots of other abilities, not on his formation piloting skills.
The team moving to a seven ship seems to make sense based on the criteria and time it takes to choose and train the pilots…who normally complete a 3 year tour. This isn’t the end of the Red Arrows before the naysayers jump on the bandwagon.

I’m tired, goodnight.

There’s a post on another forum from someone with a fairly close ear to the team, suggesting that the suitably qualified replacement for Flt Lt Stewart was investigated, but for whatever reason couldn’t be released back to the team…

Having read all of the above posts I wanted to add my thoughts.
I do not believe all men are better than women at anything.
I know of many women who are better than men at things they do, even if tradition would suggest it to be wrong.
History and social conditioning places men in some positions and women in others.

Back to the subject.
Controversial, but a thought. Can you imagine what would have been said and thought had this young women been the pilot of either of the aircraft that were involved in last years accidents. Again social conditioning would provoke a different response to the ones that were made.
There are many people still out there who would have believed that it was pilot error just because the pilot was female.
I believe the RAF trains their pilots to the same standard whether male or female. I would expect that the position was offered to the candidate who was the best fit for the job this time round.
It’s a shame that whatever circumstances have caused the early departure have happened. I just hope there is nothing sinister about the decision.

maybe just maybe she had to perform better than the other male aircrew during the year of her application because there would have been the inevitable “can a woman do the job as well as a man” prejudice to overcome.

I reckon this is close to the truth. On a website run by female US combat pilots that I sadly can’t find at the moment, I remember seeing some FAQs for aspiring female pilots, the advice being that you have to be better than the guys in order to compete.

You’ve only to go forward a litttle to see how it went.

Angel Interceptors crewed by women only. Rumours that Captain Black operated a selection couch and that’s how Destiny Angel gained her wings, and in the process starting the war with the mysterons by banging the attack button with her bum, are not believed to be true, the strings would have become tangled.

That’s the spirit ! If you can’t deal with the debate – close it down. I bet you’ve won stacks of arguments using that clever ploy.

You have very clearly lost this argument. Most contributors are on the side of equality and against your rather insidious style of misogyny – you are the only one out on a very distant limb. I am suggesting the thread is closed as it is way way off topic and is frankly becoming an insult to the many women that do difficult and dangerous jobs every bit as well as their male counterparts. I suggest that if you are indeed as one poster said, a time traveller, (that can be the only explanation frankly) you transport yourself into 2012 with the rest of society.

Thanks Pc. That’s a thoughtful piece. Thank you for the tip re Fox2. Careful, or you’ll be as popular as me ! But I don’t think you care either way.

I think it’s time to close this thread – not delete it though. I think it should remain as testament to the right-wing nonsense that some believe is actually true and to views and attitudes that were outdated decades ago.

John

look to your right shoulder you will see Phil Cartwright, and countless millions more of the same mind. Just by saying that everybody should be equal will not make it happen.
Of course if you state the truth in these politically correct times there is no doubt that the full weight of the deluded destroyers of society as we once knew it will land on you, and it wont be a three pointer!!

Many years ago when i went out of the “office” it was to sort out theives and vagabonds, the ladies went out to shoplifters and other much more delicate matters that were best dealt with by a female. These days you will do well to see male or female “out of the office” as they are busy filling forms or drawing up new “Targets”

John with regard to comments you may get on this forum the best bet is take plenty of no notice, and if you want take a look at an informed up todate interesting forum without the point scoring “Fox2” is somthing special.

Happy landings, Regards PC
