Red corner tags on instruments

Been meaning to ask this for a while. Can anybody tell me what the red tag denotes on the corner of the instrument show in the image. Was it for example, ground or test use only?

Just seems strange to be there without a known purpose other than repeating a stores red that is already on the face!

Hi,

it has the RAF section reference number on it, i presume its to make ordering a replacement/spares easier

I don’t know but you will only see them on pre-war or very early wartime instruments. Sorry I can’t offer more of an explanation
