In a recent book about Duxford and its history there is a colour section of photographs covering the making of “Battle of Britain” taken by Peter R Arnold.
One shows a red nose “Me109” beating up a Hurricane from the start of the film. I always understood that the “Messerschmitts” for this one part of the film all had white painted spinners . Am I wrong?

That Hurri looks like one of the convincing static replicas to me. Happy to be corrected, though.

Although I have yet to see my copy of this book, I would be pretty sure this is the image that you are referring to. 😉
It was an uncredited original print in the late Robert Rudhall’s collection that is now lodged with the British Film Institute Library in London to honour Robert.
..and yes, although there were plenty of red nosed Buchons lurking at Duxford in the summer of 1968, it does seem that they were used on the strafing scene but may have ended on the editor’s floor.

I’m afraid I don’t have the book. I only noticed the picture while browsing through it in my local Ian Allens.

Duderank,
I am intrigued.
Can you please scan and post the page in question?
There should not be any copyright issues.

Dont know if youve got Robert J Rudhalls books on the Battle of Britain the Movie but there are colour pics in both books of Red nosed Buchons at Duxford.
Maybe a publicity shot or possibly even a deleted/edited scene?

Here’s a shot of a White spinnered Buchon, in the final cut the the ‘White’ squadron only appears in the opening sequence, although I’m sure they would have been extensively filmed.

The book you refer to is:

DUXFORD BOOK
Anyone have details of the title, author and ISBN of this new book on Duxford?
By: DazDaMan - 13th October 2006 at 19:55
Any chance of seeing this pic?
I’m fairly certain the only time the white noses were seen was at the start – it could have been just a random picture shot for publicity or something?

Remeber Duxford was used in many scenes of the film. Most famously it was used as an RAF station under attack when the hanger was blown up. But the opening scenes of the film where the RAF Hurricanes decide to up and leave france as they are due to be overan by the advancing German forces was also filmed at Duxford. This including the false Chateu (sorry iff spellings wrong didnt do french at school) made by the prop makers was filmed at the south west corner of the airfield.
So in answer to your question youve got a few scenes to chose from so possibly diff coloured spinners were used at Duxford
