After watching Aces High for the umpteenth time last night, I remembered something that I’d seen while Googling recently: a red-coloured RFC/RAF SE-5a.

Now, granted these are artistic representations, but there must be something out there on a RED SE-5a??
(Strangely enough, many moons back, I built a cardboard model of an SE that I painted red, purely as a fantasy aircraft. Strange to find there might be some real basis!)

Another photo of Schweinhund:

Yes, that would make a lot more sense! 🙂

Leslie Holden’s red SE-5a B129 was not flown on 2 SQN AFC, but on the Australian SE-5a training unit, 6 SQN AFC, based at Minchinhampton. Holden had finished his tour on 2 AFC, and was instructing – the intructors on the training squadrons had colourful identifiable aircraft. Cobby’s black-and-white check Camel of 5 SQN AFC at Leighterton was another example.

Great stuff.
Did I imagine it, or is one of the Salis SE5a replicas red all over, with a second seat installed?

There was at least one other red (fuselage) SE-5A (named Schweinhund) flown by this guy…

and here is a painting of ‘Schweinhund’ as immortalised in kit form by Roden…
Funnily enough I have an old copy of Grinnell-Milnes book in my ‘to-read’ pile at home…
Cheers

Ah, never mind! The website (which wouldn’t come up originally!) where I found the second image states this aircraft was flown by a Capt. Leslie Holden of No.2 Sqdn, Australian Flying Corps.

Interesting scheme, though.
