Seen on Ebay – pretty certain this isn’t Spitfire!
any guesses?

Dowty gearbox
I thought that nobody had bid for the item on e-Bay by the time the listing had ended? It wasn’t worth £500 in my opinion – unless it was the believed-unobtainable missing part from a project
It looks rather like a display item, the sort of thing they would take to an aviation expo like Farnborough when displaying their wares to the world.

I see that it has sold – so someone probably knows what it is – or just liked the looks of it. – oops missed the rest of the ebay ad – just saw bidding was over – no bids!!
Possible that this is not even aircraft as Dowty made reduction boxes for hovercraft as well as for wind turbines.
Interesting thing to me is the lack of part number and serial number on the data plate – unless the data plate photo is so bad that it can’t be seen. Possible this was a prototype???
Always love a mystery!!!

Looks like sometimes I´m right:rolleyes:
I thought it was a Garret from the start, but got thrown off by the Dowty bit. All makes sence now:D (almost)

Gearbox
Can’t be far off the truth.

So, can we say a Garret TPE gearbox, produced under licence by Dowty in the UK for use on (presumably) a Skyvan???
Or is it something else entirely?

Gearbox
The Dart gearbox is part of the engine whereas this is obviously a separate unit built by a gearbox specialist.
It was (and, presumably, still is) quite common for high volume parts to be made by different manufacturers to an original design. It can even be part of the contract with the manufacturer that components are made, under licence, in the user country.
For instance, when the F-4 Phantom was built for the RAF in the 60’s, part of the contract was for a 30% UK content so, Rolls-Royce made the engines, BAe at Brough made the tails and Shorts at Belfast made the outer wing panels.

I’m not a Turboprop expert but I’d make a wide guess at Skyvan or Jetstream?

Both of which are powered by the Garret TPE (;) ), so we seem to have some sort of an agreement. Thing is, if this thing is actually made by Dowty, I think it would not be on a Garret. My Dart comment was based solely on the fact that this is in the UK, and Darts have been around for a long time so something like this should not be too difficult to obtain.

Gearbox
It’s neither Merlin nor Dart but looks like the type of gearbox used to connect a remote gas turbine engine to a propeller, i.e. like the Lockheed Hercules Allison engine installation, but smaller.
It has a propeller shaft complete with locking nut but it could be off quite a number of types. I’m not a Turboprop expert but I’d make a wide guess at Skyvan or Jetstream?
It’s an interesting item and I’d say that’s all it could ever be. It’s not worth 500 smackeroonies though.
If you look carefully, there’s a Meteor tank engine Merlin engine lurking in the background of the first pic.

It looks very similar to the gearbox hanging on a Garret TPE turbine. Since it is supposedly made by Dowty, I think we can scrap that idea.
I think we can be certain that this is from a turbine. I´d say it is from a RR Dart.
Waiting to be shot down in flames!
