Reid and Siegrist

I’ve started to look into this company, very local to me (I can see the white buildings of the Caterpillar factory built on Desford aerodrome from my house).

Does anyone know much about the company? From what I’ve found out, Reid and Sigrist made aircraft instruments, but later in the war made a few prototype aircraft, so far i’ve found the;

Reid and Sigrist RS.1 Snargasher

Reid and Sigrist RS.3 Desford

and the Reid and Sigrist RS.4 Bobsleigh

http://www.nurflugel.com/Nurflugel/n_o_d/images/airplanes/reid.jpg

I’m not sure, but I think the Bobsleigh was a modified Desford for a prone pilot.

Does anyone know more about them, particuarly survivors? Apparently Snibston discovery park has one in store, which is according to them an RS.3 Desford, however the serial matches that of the Bobsleigh, and as far as I know only the Bobsleigh survives.

Lovely photos, TonyT…looks like your flash was going off in the gloomy afternoon light and adding just the right amount of ‘fill-in’ light.
Didn’t Reid and Sigrist make a Chinese copy of the Leica camera?

R&S’ Art Deco site on the A3 at New Malden, where G-AGOS was built, Decca Navigators from 1954, was demolished recently and is now a retail park.

I see no mention in this thread about the Company’s connection with the Defiant. Reid & Sigrist was the major contractor for Defiant repairs, overhauls, and conversions, literally hundreds of them passed through Desford, but I’ve never seen any photographs. Does anyone have any ?

I was told once that after the War, many Defiants were buried alongside the airfield, which was exciting, especially as the Caterpillar facility was right next to the burial site. The story was confirmed a little later by another man who saw them being buried, but he also confirmed that when the price of scrap metal went up again a few years later, they were all dug up again. I suspect this was the case in many of those ‘buried aircraft’ stories.

It is, but it is airworthy, it was having a day night shoot with others at Spanhoe Lodge. All Airworthy aircraft have to land sometime Moggy, it is the only guarranteed 100% record aviation holds, we have never left one up there. :eagerness:

Thank you for the kind comments on the photos, gawd it rained, the place was starting to take on the air of the Somme by the time we all left, I had mud where I have never had mud before.

Forgive me Tony but it looks rather firmly fixed to the ground in those (excellent) photographs.

avion ancien – you should have also apologised for the adverts for the Hinckley Time links as per post #33 😉

Nice to see it flying, but it would have looked nice alongside G-AGOH while it was at Newark – one that got away!

It is fully assembled and has been undergoing taxiing recently – witnessed that a few weeks back – not sure if it’s yet flown.

As to the ownership of the Desford, see http://www.hinckleytimes.net/news/local-news/desford-war-plane-could-fly-7446287 (although I concede that this report is three years old). Does anyone know if it has yet achieved or come any closer to its first post restoration flight?

Apologies, I thought that I’d corrected that error. But evidently I hadn’t!

”Propstrike, please read post #26!”

Well, I thought it best to inject some clarity into the dialogue after your confusion regarding the registration of the Desford !

The ‘Desford’ has been discussed many times around these parts; this thread contains some of the more relevant recent posts on the topic: https://forum.keypublishing.com/showthread.php?133703-Snibson-discovery-park-to-close-31st-July&highlight=Desford

This link posted by David Burke also provides some relevant background & includes talk of a public appeal for the project (apologies for the adverts) http://www.hinckleytimes.net/news/local-news/desford-war-plane-could-fly-7446287

As I have posted in other threads; back in the 1990s I was involved with NAM’s attempts to take the ‘Desford’ on loan to accompany the Autocrat G-AGOH, but it was not to be!
