Remember the Royal Navy Flypast at Farnborough when they had Fixed Wing Machines….

And what about the Massed Helicopter approach at Middle Wallop every year that used to have 70+ choppers….

What was so memorable about those postwar Farnborough shows was that they comprised purely British aircraft, many as prototypes and often within weeks of their first flight. Exciting displays despite the restrictions post Derry tragedy. Later the BoB shows at Biggin and the great US shows at Mildenhall. All unmatched by current shows, good though many are.

How many of you have heard and felt a sonic boom at an airshow? For me nothing can beat Neville Duke running in fast, low and silently over Laffans Plain in the Hunter pouring on the coals (as the commentator put it) arriving over the runway at the same instant as his sonic double crack and boom came to earth from 30,000 feet.

This was always a favorite of mine of how displays ‘used to be’.

Le Ferte Alais again, with plenty of UK based Warbirds.

Cheers

I have always thought of it as flying and sex are safe until you take risks.,however it’s true to say that risks add to the fun.
Fantastic clip which has sent my mind back to shows of old. Memories I have that I wish I had on film, such as these.

1) Biggin Hill Concorde with Spitfires MH434 and ML417
2) Blenheim and 2 Mosquitos at Biggin Hill
.

It makes me sad that I’m most likely never going to see anything like that, Although Lancaster with Tornado at RIAT this year was pretty cool

There are sooo many aircraft in museums that I will never have the privilege to see and hear in the air first hand, I feel very fortunate at getting a chance to see something like a Vulcan in the air because I doubt it’ll get returned to the air again after it gets retired? I’ve often looked through photos online of 80’s airshows with great envy…

3) Flying Legends at Duxford with Tigercat with 2 Bearcat’s
4) Ray Hanna valley dives at Biggin Hill
5) The Brietling Fighters
6) Seeing Buccaneers and Lightnings fly in the 1980’s

I’m sure there are many more too, all in all I am glad I was born in the 70’s and started going to airshows in the 80’s and 90’s, having said that now still provides magic like the Eagle squadron Etc. It’s just a shame the action is a little more distant now at many venues, I personally love Old Warden and Shoreham and miss Biggin Hill and Mildenhall the most.

What brought me up with a jolt was post #13 and the realisation that there were people posting here who had never seen Concorde fly because they are too young!!

Me too!

Fighter Meets, Biggin Airfair and BoB days were great, Old Warden is a one off and still going strong. I also really loved the Orsett Air days, I think there were 3 but poorly attended which was a shame and now the trees at the western end have gone makes it so much easier to take off in that direction.

Totally agree with all of the threads. We all have No1 show choices for different reasons. Farnborough had some good memories for me, SR71 and Concorde, but I would probably pick Mildenhall as my Choice. F15’s F18’s MH53’s, KC135’s in buckets…… This is where this forum stands out. Someone somewhere shares the same memories, ideas or aspirations and its great to connect.

Hmmm, Sex has caused me more trouble than any aeroplane I flew, so Sex has always been dangerous and flying has been safe.

This thread reminds me of the saying.
“When I was young flying was dangerous, but sex was safe”.

Boastful moment. The last time I saw Concorde fly was when I was in formation with it in the middle of diamond nine. We closed up enough to hear the roar of its engines over our own aircraft, as we tucked up under it. It was like being beamed aboard the mother ship as we manoeuvred for the photographer. I took lots of images and video footage…

Would you be able to share the footage -please 🙂

Here’s a thought. Next month it will be ten years since BA retired it’s Concorde fleet.

I took lots of images and video footage. The flight was the practise for the golden jubilee flypast over the mall, and we went on a 1:35 sortie over the wash in 2002. We launched from Coltishall and it was a truly memorable experience.

No doubt someone will tell me how inaccurate I’m being, it’s the Flypast Forum way…
