Sadly I couldn’t get to pay my respects at the Memorial to this crew today, so keeping them remembered here instead, may they all RIP. http://www.halam.org.uk/frame_ED823.htm

The idea was briefly assessed Peter, but IIRC the nature of the construction meant that a move was not possible.
A few years ago a similar proposal was considered (very briefly) for moving the tower at RAF Wigsley – similar structural issues and the fact that it had some sort of listing status, saw that option also kicked into the long grass.
As for a café, expect some fresh information about that project in the coming weeks – currently awaiting initial designs from the architects.

Winthorpe’s tower was demolished overnight in the late 1980s when the A17 bypass road was built – the land owner promised the museum access to remove various artefacts, but then neglected to advise the museum. The topic may be mentioned in a new RAF Winthorpe book that’s in the pipeline!
A correction to the earlier post the new Notts aviation booklet contains 40 memorial locations – I’ve just signed off the final proof!!!

I passed close to the memorial a couple of weeks ago jr but I was on a tight time schedule – I may try and call in tomorrow on my way back from the museum.
This is one of 41 memorial sites in the new Notts memorial booklet that is ‘slowly’ coming to fruition – another long story for the next time we meet up.
To the crew of ED823!
I also tried to photograph your plaque in Durham the other weekend – but the town hall building is closed at the weekend!! 🙁
