Removing paint….

I’m thinking of modelling the late Spencer Flack’s scarlet Spitfire XIV G-FIRE from an old Academy kit, but not sure how to get the old paint off. Anyone able to help? 😮

Having just tested it, nothing works better than nail varnish remover. Perfect results after about 10 minutes. Mr Muscle did nothing for the enamel paint on my metal SBS commando.

I think, Daz, I was the one who originally suggested Mr Muscle. It seems largely to have done the trick, I find there are always one or two bits that need a second go.

Can I just emphasise though what I said for the benefit of people who have not read the original thread, Mr Muscle does in my experience work well as a paint stripper, but it is lethal stuff, far stronger than most stuff you use in modelling. I tend not to worry too much about warnings on the packet, but in this case I would very strongly advise wearing gloves, keeping well away from the face when spraying as the fumes are very strong and preferably when spraying do it outdoors and not copy my mistake but do it downwind from you.

Don’t want to sound dramatic, but honestly it is not something to be experimenting with in your bedroom.

Modelstrip is still around and is a lot less dangerous and works well, though in my experience more awkward, serious injuries aside.

There used to be a product called Modelstrip, especially for this. Think I used to get mine from Hannants. Not sure they advertise it because it’s a bit dodgy to send through the post (very caustic) Works a treat, though.

Well, I had a bit of a go with the old Mr Muscle – here’s the result…

Have a look here:

Of course, kids shouldn’t try this without supervision of a parent…

The faint dribble of Mr Muscle that was left in the can DId take off some patches of paint – I’m gonna need more, however!

White spirit can be lethal for plastic if rubbed too much. If the paint is fresh (less than 2 days), of course white spirit will work for enamels, and acetone for acrylics.

Have you tried white spirit?

Mr Muscles is pretty lethal stuff!

Thanks Frank. I found an old thread I’d done a while back about the same thing in the meantime, and someone suggests Mr Muscle oven cleaner for stripping paint! 🙂

go see in the tips & tricks section of www.aircraftresourcecenter.com … There should be a way to do it with oven cleaner. At your own risk, though, that stuff is nasty.

Glad you posted – i found the lower half of the starboard wing for my 1/48 Beaufighter today, encrusted in paint from a leaky tin that i need to get rid of.
