Final part of my USA trip was to the final 3 days of the Air Races.
I’ve wanted to get there for as long as I can remember, and I finally did it!
I’m posting mainly non-race stuff first, but will put more on later.

Great pics! I, too, would like to get to Reno for the races. Maybe in the next couple of years, hopefully!

TMN is correct, the ‘MB5’ looks exactly what it is…a modified P51.I have seen it in the flesh and it looks totally wrong!!The MB5 was long and sleek..in fact so long it made the wings appear too small.
Reno is a great place to visit and well worth paying extra to get into the pits!!

DazDaMan – the one on the left in your photo actually took part in the Sport Class (I think it was) and did very well. Definately looked and sounded the part.
Blimey! After watching the video, I can imagine the sound was awesome at the race! 😀

The Blue Max – Sorry to say there is nothing wrong with the photo of the MB5, it is that stubby! Shame really, ‘cos if it was a bit longer it would look great !

The Mustang scale replicas are called, I believe, Thunder Mustangs, and going by the number in one of the hangars, they are being assembled there.

A 75% scale all-composites Mustang powered by the Falconer 690hp V-12.
Looks like a lotta fun! 😀

Why does the Piper Cub like thing only have one aleron??!!!!
It’s a remarkable ‘crazy flying’ routine performed by Kent Pietsch during which he and the aircraft (an Interstate S-1 Cadet built in 1942) create the kinds of situations that really make you whince and cringe (especially if, like me, you’re so caught up in the excitement of the event that you don’t realise the routine’s about to happen!!). During the ‘intrusion’ bits suddenly start to fall off the machine before it strays into the airspace of another aerobatic performance! Kent then sends various stooges on the apron running for cover by scooting along the ground, hopping back into the air and finally coming to an abrupt halt crowd centre. The hapless pilot is then arrested and carted off! Brilliant stuff!!

The scaled down mustang is a replica called the Thunder Mustang. It’s powered by a 640 HP Falconer V-12. It flies kinda fast 😀 !

Nice pictures! I went to Reno in ’03 and can’t wait to go again… the amosphere is like nothing I’ve experienced before, Section 3 are a major laugh – especially when one of their rank supposedly steals an aircraft which then begins to fall apart in flight! There’s more to Reno than the racing – warbird concours d’elegance, static park, fantastic airshow… thanks for sharing. The racing pics now please!

The replica MB.5 has been built using as many P51 parts as possible, hence the slightly distorted and stumpy appearance. It’s quite a piece of work, although admittedly it doesn’t quite do justice to the original.

Very nice, whats with the replica MB5? Looks a bit too short for me, making it look chubby, could be wrong though.
