Hi all,
I have never been to Reno despite promising myself for more years than I can remember.
The races run from September 16th – 19th.
Do any of you guys know ‘the score’ on getting there, accomodation etc? Is there a party going that I might tag along with if I can get the flights?
I guess I may have left it too late for this year but you never know- somebody reading this thread might have booked a package but now can’t go?
I’d love to do it.

Reno is fast approaching. I’m going to Breckenridge next Wed., then we’re leaving for Reno on Friday or Saturday. Three Sea Furies and a Bearcat! Should be fun!
Hope to see some of you out on the high desert!

Reno
THank you Septic,JDK, SRP et al for the inspiration. We have to go!
I will make some enquiries about flights tomorrow and thereafter make a plan.
Sorry I haven’t thanked you all sooner but we have been pop – pop – poppin’ along in the PT22 over the weekend. We did Horsea Island (great little fly-in just north of Clackers) on Saturday and displayed at Boxted (WW2 USAAF base and now a farmers field 363 days of the year) on Sunday.
Thanks again for putting a smile on my face you guys – we are excited fit to burst about Reno!

Reno
It is some years since I attended Reno for the races. I went four times in 5 years and loved every minute! I would second the motion to obtain a pylon pass if you can as it is the way to truly experience the power, sound and breathtaking speed of the aircraft. 420+ MPH around the pylon, and they have been slowed by the “G” being pulled as they turn! They are faster down the straights!
I also concur with Steve P. When you hear the shriek….no thats not the sound….a moaning sound a Merlin makes when putting out probably double its rated power, you know that it could let go at any time! The hot rodders axiom “There is no substitute for cubic inches” has merit at Reno! A 4360 on a Sea Fury is only (W)right in this context.
To Hairplane I say go even if you haven’t lined up a hotel in which to stay. Given that Stead is about twenty minutes out of Reno and that Tahoe is an easy drive (Freeway) of about double that your choices of a place for sleeping isn’t limited.
Go and enjoy!
Chris
Oh, and let us know how you find it on your return.

There are plenty of room available in Carson City, which is only 20 minutes out of Reno.
As for Dago Red, well I have no desire to fly ANYTHING at 120″ of manifold pressure. Those Stanley Steamers are an explosion waiting to happen. Give me a big round radial everytime!

I stayed in the Cal Neva hotel (once owned by Frank Sinatra!) on the shore of Lake Tahoe last year and drove into Reno every day – approx a 40 minute journey over the Sierra Nevada mountains. Brilliant. Wish I was going again this year…

If you come to Reno you’re not going to want an old, slow Mustang anymore!
Tell that to the Dago Red team!

Hi hairyplane,
I went last year so hopefully it hasn’t changed too much.
You’ll have to move quickly as accomadation gets booked up very quickly, with alot of people repeat booking each year.
I stayed at the Atlantis in Reno and took quite a long cab ride out to the airfield, the Hilton in Reno is where most of the pilots/crew seem to stay as it has some sort of tie in with the sponsorship, it also has a Air racing bar!
When I get home tonight I’ll post some contact details which may be of use.
You must try to get a Pylon pass as this the only way you can really comprehend the speed of the racers.
To get there I went via Phoenix and came home via Vegas with Virgin Airlines.
Be back later
Septic.
