I don’t know whether you historic aviation fans are interested in George Cayley or not, but for those who are there is a flight of a replica of the first man carrying glider in Brompton near Scarborough tomorrow, along with a fly past by the Red Arrows and a Virgin Atlantic Jumbo. This is to mark the 150th anniversary of the flight of the first winged aircraft and there will be alot going off apparently.

Hi Comet!
I went Google on Richard Branson. A lot of hits but nothing on this subject. Well, maybe on page 100 or so ……
Adding Brompton to the search criteria changed that, a few of my hits below:

It seems like these links have a very short expiry date. Days or hours?
Thanks again,
Christer

Hello again Christer!!
I just performed a search on Google (advanced search with terms “Richard Branson” and “Brompton”). It came up with quite a list, some are dead links, some are not as good. Here are three to get you started.

I’m having a few problems with the top one, but it was ok in Google.

I’m onto it Christer, I want some photos of it too. I’ll get back when I’ve found something.

Is there a web based news article on the event? I´ve searched but not found.
Thanks for any forthcoming hint,
Christer

Apparently, it was a good day, about 2000 turned out to see Richard Branson pilot the replica glider about 8 feet off the ground. Then there was a display by the Red Arrows and the VS 747 flypast. I was truly disappointed to miss it, especially as I was travelling to work on the same bus (Scarborough to Pickering) that the people going to see the show were on, I really envied them!!! That’s the problem with being rota-ed on to do Saturdays in a museum.

i heard about this when I was at Elvington last weekend for Project Propeller. He seemed to be quite an inventor.
The funny story attached to this event is that when he had built his prototype glider, he ordered his coachman to fly it. After successfully completing the flight, and quite unfazed by being the first person to fly a glider, his coachman promptly handed in his notice saying ” Sir George I was employed to drive a carriage not to fly…”
Hope everything went well over the weekend.
