I heard on the news today there are rumours that there is going to be a new referendum on Australia’s constitution. If Labour wins the next elections, it will organise a referendum so people can decide wheter Australia should become a republic, directly chosen by the people, or should keep QEII as head of state.
Since there are many Ozzies around here, what do you think will/would happen?

Gentlemen (and lady),
I’m a regular in the commercial forum, but I jump in here occassionally just to see what’s up. I am not Aussie, but my wife is. Apparantly they voted about 2 years ago whether to break away from the Queen or not. The Queen won, so I don’t know if they want to do the same election again and obtain different results, or what.

That is an interesting question and I can’t answer it. However it is interesting that I don’t think the UK can abolish its monarchy without the consent of other nations who have the Queen/King as their head of state. Don’t jump down my throat its only my musings and I don’t even know if it is true but whatever the future of the monarchy many countries have a say in it although ultimately the final word goes to the British.
The Australians had a vote on this issue a couple or three years back and it was very very close but at that time they chose to retain the monarchy. Anyhow you look at it though its up to them and them alone.

I don’t think the UK will become a republic at least I hope not, a President Blair or such like would be too much to stomach.
Australia will become a republic with in the next 10 years, by popular vote.

We should do a transfer deal before it’s too late and get some return for our investment.
Roll up roll up, get one New Zealand free with every Australia bought.:D
I’m sure some wealthy American with more money than sense would be interested.
Seriously though it’s a shame but it’s inevitable that the Australians will go down the republican route, the links with the mother country are becoming less and less with the influx of immigrants from the far east and the like.
Whats the likely hood of the Australian Labour Party winning the next election ?

Could be true, its gonna happen sooner or later. You see the thing with Australia is that they are a free and independant nation and have the right to choose their head of state. Unlike your vision of Europe where everybody does exactly what Brussels tells them to do without question. Or else. 🙂
Yes they are free and have the right to choose. But untill now they have chosen the King of England as their head of state, nothing wrong with that. And the Royal in RAAF does have a ring to it, doesn’t it.
