Reputation of the Lancaster

As the Lancaster had a terrible reputation for not starting, even on a sunny day, the boys of 4 & 6 Groups in Yorkshire were often sent down to Lincolnshire to lend a helping hand…

RE: Reputation of the Lancaster

I couldn’t agree more.
I never did get to say this before, so I will say it now…
I have met a number of aircrew who flew in BOTH types (Halifax & Lancaster) and they ALL speak highly of both types, now who am I to argue with veterans? Admittedly, both types had their good points as well as their bad points, but on the whole, they were pretty equally matched.
I would dearly love to be in the position of having lots of money to spend, for I would build from scratch, a Lancaster, Stirling and Halifax, the three main British heavies of Wartime Bomber Command.
If I have said anything bad about the Lancaster, it is purely in good humoured banter, nothing else.
Enjoy Christmas folks.

RE: Reputation of the Lancaster

I had a feeling this was all going to end in tears.

They were both superb aircraft, and we are extemely fortunate to have had both of them when we needed them most.

It is however extremely unfortunate that we no longer have a flying Halifax to fly as a true Brother In Arms with our Lancaster; hopefully it can be remedied one day.

It doesn’t matter anymore which was the best, they were both very good at what they were best at, so it is best left at that really, anything else is totally pointless now.
Besides, many young men were killed horribly in both types, and it is only when you read the harrowing stories from the men involved that you realise how wonderful both these types were – and at exactly the same time – how horrible they were as well.

This kind of bulls**t bias towards one type or another has got the preservation movement nowhere.
We all know that if certain people had not been biased in the past, then we would now still have several Halifaxes, and Stirlings, and the rest, and we would no doubt have an example of each flying along with the Lancs, or at least under active restoration to fly by someone, and Hendon’s Halifax would have been fully restored years ago no matter how much it cost.
Also the Panton brothers would most likely have their Halifax as a monument to their lost brother Christopher, to go along-side their Lancaster.

One of my (very many !) dreams is to own and fly a Lancaster one day, but I would always feel that I was missing out on something…….so a Halifax would have to be aquired somehow to build up a collection of heavy bombers, but then I would have to consider the other types like the Stirling, Lincoln, Flying Fortress, Liberator, Superfortress etc.
It may be a pie in the sky dream, but all these types mean exactly the same to me, none is more important than another.
Huge numbers of young men died in all of them, and as far as real unbiased history is concerned, we could never have done it without any of them.
And to argue now about which one was better, is somehow, IMHO, cheating the men who fought and very many times died and helped win the war for us in the others.
It’s almost as if it is somehow considered to be a lesser event to have fought and died and won the war in a Halifax, rather than a Lancaster, and vice versa.
Of course very similar to the Spitfire V Hurricane, or the Lightning V Mustang arguments……..know what I mean ?

Let’s just be very thankful for the designers who brought us (alphabetical order) The Halifax and The Lancaster just when we needed them, and the crews who were willing to put their very lives on the line for us, in whatever type.

Truce ?

Happy Haggling

Mick

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 19-12-01 AT 09:47 PM (GMT)]Cheers Lancman.
Halibag I am not biased as I think that there should be a flying Hali in the world but making fals statements in photos of the lanc is silly. What if a student was to see this info and make the wrong assumptions about both aircraft? That is how false info gets to the younger generation and the truth is lost to time.!

RE: Reputation of the Lancaster

Actually, oh liable to spin for no reason one, I HAVE put my views on other aircraft on here before, so there!

Your photo doctoring skills are getting worse.

And stop comparing your lumbering old rusty Hallibags to the RAF’s finest 4-engined bomber of the war. Cheers.

RE: Reputation of the Lancaster

I don’t see any comments here from Lancman, perhaps he knows this to be a factual depiction, doctored or not.
🙂
Besides, I’m only having a freindly poke at all the shining Glory the Lancaster gets.
🙂
I actually DO like other aircraft besides the Halifax and am prepared to say to on forum. I have a great affection for the Lancaster & Stirling as well as the Halifax. Ain’t seen Lancman put forward a similar statement yet.
🙁
I can’t see anything wrong with some of us (those who are able)posting fake or doctored pictures if they have some humour attached.

Keep on smiling 🙂
