hi guys and gals,
I have recently been given the delicate job of trying to research the squadron and location of an ex Lanc pilot that was in the Raf. Details are very limited to just his name and number due to that dreaded disease altzhimers. I have tried looking on the internet but no luck at all. The only other little tidbit was that he was based somwhere up near Norfolk.
His name is Fl/lt Sidney Douglas Good D.F.C and flew 2 tours on lancs and strilings during the war. After the war, he flew with transport command on yorks as well as botha’s and oxfords.
If anyone can point me in the right direction I would be very greatful.
It is very sad to see this amazing gentlemen loose his memories of that time.

Try the Air Historical Branch in London, they may be able to help you.
Good Luck in you searches.

The best place to go to get the various abbreviations and notations on service records deciphered is the excellent forum at www.rafcommands.com

I had to apply to RAF Innsworth to obtain my late fathers records and claim his medal but my mother had to sign the letter.
This link will give details of how to apply for them:

You will however have to get Fl/lt Sidney Douglas Good D.F.C next of kin to sign a letter giving authority to supply copies of his service records and of any medal he is owed.
If like me once you have received his records you will need an interpreter to decipher the writing.
Good luck.
BP.

The PRO (National Archives) publish some books which will help. I’m far from an expert, but have a dig on the internet about ‘how’ rather than looking for facts. It is amazing how much you can track down. A visit to the PRO to see the ORB of 44 Sqn may well give you his other unit pre and post 44; as well as what opps he flew on with them.
There are others here more expert than me on this though! C’mon chaps!

You can actually apply to Innsworth for his service records yourself, so long as you have the written permission of either him or his family for you to do so.

The London Gazette website (www.london-gazette.co.uk) reveals the following information:
Supplement to LG issue 36248, dated 16 November 1943
Warrant Officer Sidney Douglas Good (655822) was commissioned as a Pilot Officer on probation (emergency) (158299) with effect from 30 August 1943.
Supplement to LG issue 37001, dated 27 March 1945
DFC awarded to Sidney Douglas Good (158299), RAFVR, 44 Sqn.
No citation is given
I know this isn’t a lot of detail, but at least this gives you one squadron that he served with. The only other suggestion I can make is that I assume you are researching this on behalf of Mr. Good’s family. Would it be possible to get them to apply for his service records from the RAF, and get him to sign the application form? This would open up a lot more information that can then be followed up.
