Research re asbestos in aircraft components 1960s and 1970s

Dear all,
I would be most grateful for any information that will assist in my research. We are acting for the estate of a gentleman who has died from an asbestos related cancer. He worked for British United Airlines who later became British Caledonian between about 1965-1975 and he was exposed to asbestos dust when he was changing braking assemblies on aircraft and also from removal of gaskets in the aircraft, which we believe were made of asbestos. The aircraft he came into contact with were Viscounts, Bristol Britannia’s, BAC1-11s, Vickers VC10s and later on Boeing 707s; and Vampires, Venoms, Doves, Herons and Comets.

Does anyone please have any information that may assist regarding asbestos, and have any documentation, diagrams, manuals, papers, and in particular information regarding the braking systems (including brake linings and braking mechanisms) and the gaskets, and the type of asbestos involved?

Your assistance is much appreciated.
Many thanks,
Carrie Newall

My experience of asbestos in aircraft is somewhat earlier than the time period that Carrie Newall is researching but perhaps . similar uses of the material may have continued after 1945. The Beaufighter cabin and cannon heating ducting were asbestos insulated, the work was sub-contracted to Bells Asbestos and Engineering of Slough .
Bells also supplied asbestos insulation to the aircraft industry for engine and cabin bulkheads,to what degree of hazard this variety of material was rated I do not know but it was certainly white in colour.
Hope this helps in your research Carrie.

The Vampire and Venom have a small amount in them as we found out when we purchased one from the IWM and
had to go through hoops to be able to move it.

Thanks for your respnose Mr Smith. I will look into Meggit Ltd. Would you be able to provide any information about asbestos use as an ex-Dunlop employee at all please?

Many thanks,

Carrie

You could try Meggit Ltd, current successors to Dunlop, who design/manufacture (past and present) aircraft braking systems

Adress/tel no. (but no email address)
Holbrook Lane
Coventry
CV6 4QY
UK

Tel: +44 (0) 2476 682000
Fax: +44 (0) 2476 683407

However if they think your enquiry might end up in a lawsuit for damages they might clamp up a bit – but you are, presumably, used to that
