Following the recent riots etc, and also, speaking with a voice of older years, I have noticed a distinct lack of respect in all ways of life.
Have we lost it totally?. and if we all respected everything as we did when I was younger, would it make a difference?.
Could it even be done?.if so, how would you go about it?.

jim morals and respect have gone right out the window everywhere. it is just as crappy here. the younger folks here, their parents dont make them do anything that instills morals or character. fairly sad if you ask me.. 🙁

I don’t drive, thanks, but if you really want to cut the grass in the back garden then I won’t stand in your way. 🙂

These are more or less the lines I was thinking along when I spoke of “earning respect” earlier today.
Anyone who makes, or has made, a positive contribution to their community or to society at large has by definition done enough to earn our respect.
I’m relieved. I was afraid I’d have to cut your grass or wash the car. 😀

Any suggestions on where one can get a decent grown-up discussion these days, AP?
No, frankly I don’t any more.
that’s where you went wrong linc !!
you’ll find ignorant bitch is the correct phrase !!
Respect eh?
I have to say that round here it seems to be the older generation that is lacking in manners and respect.

….they’ve earned some respect simply because they’re built the society we have today.

They don’t even have the intellect to think at the level they are educated to. The place is being run by thick headed, over educated, idiots.

J Boyle – exactly the point I made in the parallel thread in response to GA’s post. Deja vu…..??

Matt. What I stated the old timer told me covers those points you made.

To me, it comes naturaly to say thank you, please etc, it costs nothing to be polite.
You don’t need to respect someone to be polite to them. 😮
Common decency is different to respect.

J Boyle. John, Your 1st line regarding what I am lamenting is spot on. To me, it comes naturaly to say thank you, please etc, it costs nothing to be polite.
When I joined the Police Force, and this YOU will know is right, an old timer said, “You can always start off nice, then get nasty, but you can’t start off nasty then get nice”.
How right he was, and it served me well for 30yrs.

While Grey Area is correct respect needs to be earned, I think what Lincoln is lamenting is the loss of “automatic” respect for everthing in society.
Does it hurt anyone to show a modicum or respect towards seniors, veterans or others even if they’re strangers and thus haven’t “earned ” your respect?
Or perhaps a political office holder even if you disagree with them? (That suggestion is based on comments by adults on this very forum wishing people ill..or worse…simply because they don’t like their politics. Really people, grow up).
Same applies to social institutions.
While they may not have perfect records by today’s hyper critical standards,
(For example, yes, the Army did some bad things in the colonial days, and “a vicar said something I disagree with so I think everything church does is tosh” ) they’ve earned some respect simply because they’re built the society we have today.
Just something to think about.

I think part of the problem, a BIG part of it.. is that we have people in positions of power who are educated beyond their level of intelligence & they haven’t got the first bloody clue how to run things.

If you speak to older business people and parents from overseas they will say the same “The young don’t care any more about work, the economy, business or their parents”
Our youth now love luxury. They have bad manners, contempt for authority; they show disrespect for their elders and love chatter in place of exercise; they no longer rise when elders enter the room; they contradict their parents, chatter before company; gobble up their food and tyrannize their teachers.
So what else is new, Jay?
Sky High was right. Different thread but same stuff/rubbish/opinions posted by the same people.

Well Arthur, at least you have read 36 threads of rubbish, how come?.

“The young don’t care any more about work, the economy, business or their parents”
I’d disagree since I was 16 I’ve only been umeployed for 3 months. And even if i was unemployed now I’d still refuse to go on the dole. Most of my friends are the same. But then I guess it depends on certain areas maybe…
