The Spitfires won’t become empty shell’s. The is no reason to strip them to that extent.
Regarding ‘beyond the comprehension’ in terms of the Tempest V for what reason would they wish to fly one again. The BBMF’s title
tend to indicate the prime reason for flying Hurricane’s and Spitfires.
They capture the public’s imagination in a way that a Tempest in airworthy condition will not ever. Secondly the is no spares supply to tap into for the Napier Sabre engine. Whatever people say about the later marks being reliable how many have run in the last 40 years
in an aeroplane ? I guess none – that tends to tell a story. The is no company in the aerospace industry that has overhauled a Napier Sabre in recent memory so all in all the chances look decidedly slim of it happening.

Philo – It wasn’t a dream it was reality ! Doug Arnold was responsible
for salvaging the Tempest II ‘s from India in the 1970’s becore they passed into the hands of various different owners.

When they say they will be canbalising the BBMFs MK16s, I assume they will replace the parts with time expired pieces? It would be a shame to see them become empty shells.
As for Tempest, why couldnt they rstore the RAF museums Mk5 to fly with BBMF, as they allready have a tempest at Hendon. I guess that would be beyond the comprehension of the RAf museum, the MOD and anyone related to actually owning them.

Ant
if you mean the Shoreham D Day museum, it is very much a mix n’match witha few repro bits thrown in. We are lucky in the Uk having one complete Typhoon (RAFM) as well as several Typhoon projects. Most will yield only cockpit sections, but that aint bad.

The equipment you refer to sounds very much like the RAFM store and restoration centre during it’s move out of Cardington into Wyton.
Certainly that’s the only Tempest V that has moved in the last few years.

I do recall seeing in, I think, Flypast Mag. quite a while back, lots of airframes, engines etc in storage at Wroughton (again I think). I seem to remember seeing a Tempest V fuz as well as a Spitfire & assorted engines. Am I right or was I dreaming? Any info on this?

The BBMF has ‘high back’ and ‘low back examples of the XVI in storage. The seems to be some interest in her at the moment from the flying point of view so lets hope they get the chance.

RE: *Restorations Update* Whats going on lads?
The RAF Museum example is currently the only one in existance, but there is also a long term rebuild underway at Shoreham in West Sussex, although this too is very much static.
Hawker Restorations have made one or two comments about the possibility of scratch building a Typhoon or two,but so far nothing has happened, and whether they would be feasable to operate is yet another matter.
So all in all there is definately NOT a Typhoon on the cards at BBMF,or anywhere else for that matter.
BBMF have recently taken delivery of a low back Mk.XVI Spitfire which was previously used by the RAF’s exhibition flight, but this is purely being utilised as a spares source.Perhaps this machine, complete with D-day stripes, has been confused for a Typhoon??

I thought the only Typhoon in existance was the one at the RAF Museum, Hendon.
