RFC Aerodrome to be restored in the UK

Very exciting project taking place in Essex – an RFC Airfield is to be restored, with a museum built on site. There’s a superb website with photos, artists impression, history etc to look at

Cr@p, I thought that BBC Look East did a good job, for everybody, or haven’t you seen it.

Yes Pete I did see the Look East clip and I thought they did a good job of the presentation. My comment was to the fact some people expect an in depth history of an event right down to the pilots inside leg measurement, no insult to the presentation by Look East. The other Bloke is still a Div but at least he got his picture:diablo:

It’s local news for local people not enthusiaists…….especially that div who jumped in front of the camera just as it landed thereby getting a great closeup of the back of his head:rolleyes:

Bumps a daisy !

What a crappy clip from the BBC, leaving out all the salient facts of
what?, where? why? when? who? and couldn’t even film the landing(s) properly!

Try the BBC Look East site, showing last nights news bulletin, it’s roughly 25 minutes into the programme and far more informative, including interviews with the pilot and the airfield owner. I’m cursing that I couldn’t get over there.

Thanks Pete… i did see it last night on Look East. I must say big respect to the pilot Jonathan Whaley, fantastic displays in the Hunter, Spit and now a Camel.

Still, looked nice flying over Amersham at 13.00 hrs, in company with a Stampe, I think.

As for the Bessoneau, I believe that is in negotiation, but highly unlikely to obtain

Thread just started tonight on pprune from someone based at Odiham hoping to stop the Bessoneau going abroad and was there any organisation in the UK that would want it.

What a great project, having been involved at Hooton Park for several years where we are struggling to keep our remaining Grade2* listed Belfast Hangers standing I understand the feelings and passion that sites such as this inspire Its a great pity that public funding bodies don’t seem to share that passion. Good luck with the restoration and keep the info flowing on the site its encouraging to see the progress and adds heart to our own aspirations.

Received a press release this morning regarding Stow Maries – a flying Sopwith F1 Camel (I presume replica), which will be painted in the markings of Lieutenant Hollington who flew a Camel from Stow Maries in 1918, will be based at RFC Stow Maries later this year

Great idea…I wish them well and will certainly visit when completed.
I don’t know a lot about the RFC and WWI avaition in general….
a museum would be welcome.

And the great thing about an RFC base is it would be small enough to be practical these days where WWII airfields are being destroyed for industrial, housing or agriculture uses.

Stow Maries Aerodrome.

Hello everyone. As per my site name, I am the curator of the Stow Maries Aerodrome project. Firstly I would like to thank everyone for their support of this project.

I have been researching the aerodrome since 1978 and have a large amount of documentation on it as well as interview material from people who worked or were actually stationed there.

The project is progressing well and our website at http://stowmaries.com is attracting a lot of interest from all over the world.

We have addressed some of the issues mentioned above re wildlife/flying etc and I would be only too pleased to answer any questions on the subject.

Once again, thank you for all your support and we hope to see you at the site as soon as it is ready.

Ivor Dallinger
Curator
Stow Maries Aerodrome.

This is great news.. I’ve been hoping something like this would come about for some time:) …an actual reconstructed period airfield! Now all we need is a BOB airfield (Kenley?), a Bomber command airfield (East Kirkby?) and an 8th AF airfield (bassingbourn?) reconstructed…:D

I’m campaigning for Bassingbourn (tower already grade 2 listed) to be preserved (unhappy they’ve gone and erected buildings in the middle of the grass apron of such a well preserved and possibly the most historic of all the 8th’s bases 😡 – think Clark Gable, Bob Hope, Memphis Belle – William Wyler etc!!)

I just don’t know who to campaign too!
