I’ve just been reading that Lt Leiffe-Robinson, who was the first pilot to shoot down a Zeppelin north of London , was based at Sutton’s Farm. Does anyone know here this is/was?
TIA

Suttons Farm
And of course, if you want to learn more about the history of Suttons Farm and RAF Hornchurch, then a trip to the Purfleet Heritage Centre is a must!
Also, there is a very good DVD available about the history of Hornchurch that also covers the history of Suttons Farm. The dvd is titled “Fighter Station, The RAF Hornchurch Story”, priced at about £15.00 (I know Midland Counties stock it). Also there is the Hornchurch trilogy of books written by Richard Smith which gives a very good complete history of the airfield.

PS…Yep, I thought that Suttons Farm fell within the boundaries of what was to become RAF Hornchurch.

Suttons Farm was on the edge of the RFC aerodrome known by the same name and adjacent to the technical site. The later RAF Hornchurch buildings were situated further west than the RFC camp. There are plans of both in “The Battle of Britain Then & Now”.

From what I remember reading somewhere, Suttons Farm was very near to RAF Hornchurch.

Grab a copy of “Battle of Britain: Then and Now” as there is a good section on aifields from the Battle and their history. There is a good map section in some of these and the information you want may be in there.

Suttons Farm
Yep, Jimbo27 is indeed correct. Suttons Farm was the original name of what was to become RAF Hornchurch. Suttons Farm took it’s name, not unsuprisingly, from the farmland on which it was situated. If I remember correctly, the main Suttons Farm site was slightly more to the southern end of what was to become RAF Hornchurch.
