Well from the looks of her that is not beyond the realms of possibility but she needs something she can turn her hand to afterwards. Of all those pics my favourites have to be the Arctic cam Sea King, Apache and B-52. Not that there is anything wrong with Victoria’s offerings though.

After time for a little moderator deliberation, the thread is now re-opened.

The Sea Vixen RIAT thread will remain closed owing to the number of personal attacks it provoked.

All personal attacks will be deleted in full, so please keep the discussion civil.

Have fun!

I don’t want to be accused of advertising other sites but we’ve had a very long (and surprisingly polite!) discussion on this topic on Fightercontrol (in the Airshow section), which you might find of interest. I’ll refrain from repeating my points here as I’ll doubtless be accused of yet more hideous crimes by my team of groupies (or is it harpies?)!

Adrian, I think you’re probably right that cost was the reason why warbirds weren’t used to fill-out the FAA display. RIAT seem reluctant to shower money on civilian acts unless they have to, indeed this was the reason given for the Russian’s absence, the last time I heard Mr.Prince being questioned about it. It does seem a bit shabby though to charge thirty-odd quid for admission and still be too cheap to finance anything more than a flyby from the Sea Vixen!

As for this business of hyping-up the numbers, I agree that their continual claims for quantity and quality do seem a tad lame. Okay, it’s fine to accept that they have to deal with dwindling resources, operational commitments, technical cancellations, weather and the like, but I think lots of us would feel a little more comfortable if RIAT didn’t continually insult us by pretending that the show is something that it isn’t. Clearly, it’s gone a long way past the days of being a huge military spectacular, and if one excludes the more familiar perfomers (aerobatic teams and the like) and the civilian space-fillers, there clearly is little more than a comfortably-sized but potentially very good air show at the core of this overblown circus.

Personally, I wish RIAT would accept and promote the show for what it is rather than what they want it to be, stop using enthusiasts as a secondary source of easy cash, and use what aircraft they do have more creatively.

The show itself was a pale shadow of those 10 years and more ago – perhaps half the number of static aircraft.

A QUARTER actually! There used to be 300-400 aircraft in static and this year there were just 90! RIAT are still putting out press releases saying ” With over 300+ aircraft participating…”. !!!!

And who considered an FAA 100-year display without including the Historical Flight? Not that they could have flown in the weather, admittedly, but they weren’t even there. Oh yes, a Chipmunk. Hurrah for that.

If you read the forums, it was well known that the entire RNHF are grounded and unservicable for various reasons. I guess funding is always going to be an issue, but this must have been quite embarrassing. You would think they could have had an FAA Pageant with TFC Wildcat/Martlet, Kennet’s Seafire and Wasp, Shuttleworth’s Pup etc. Lots of airworthy types privately owned that were flown by the FAA. Surely, not the old ‘cost’ issue again? As you say Graham, the ticket prices creep up, yet the number of aircraft are decreasing…something wrong there!

I was there on Sunday: set off around 7.00 am from nearby and was in before 8. Got out reasonably quickly as the Arrows performed, but I could see that others were stationary for considerable periods. I think that they do their best, but too many people down too few roads has to lead to problems.

The show itself was a pale shadow of those 10 years and more ago – perhaps half the number of static aircraft. There used to be two solid lines that the public walked between – not so nowadays. I’m sorry I haven’t kept old programmes to convince doubters, but it is not just old men’s tales. The flying display was ruined by the weather, but suffered from the usual RIAT problem of spreading out the participants too thinly. Four items per hour is not enough, even before the weather hits.

Whilst agreeing that operational commitments must come first, I do wonder quite how intensely committed the Tornado force is, for example. What, no possible chance of an F.Mk.3? Or a Tucano? And who considered an FAA 100-year display without including the Historical Flight? Not that they could have flown in the weather, admittedly, but they weren’t even there. Oh yes, a Chipmunk. Hurrah for that.

I was also very less than impressed by the commentary. Rather too many expositions of what I should be impressed by – I can judge that for myself, thank you. And when the flying display is delayed or closed down, I expect the commentators to fill in the time for the crowd, not to duck out with an “and now over to the show radio…..”

The organisers and flyers do deserve our thanks, but as my good wife put it: the times may be hard, but when I pay for a pound of mince I don’t expect to get only a half. The ticket price hasn’t been reduced since those earlier glory days.
