Further to the thread on Historic Aviation regarding the MiG-29 mid-air at Fairford in 1993 (http://forum.keypublishing.com/showthread.php?t=122023) I dug out my shots of the show and was seriously impressed at the variety of aircraft, including some that I have only ever seen fly at this display.
These are taken directly from the original prints with minimal cleaning up. Taken on my trusty old Canon T70, with Sigma 300mm. Shown in the order they were taken.

Nice memories there, Growler. Thanks for posting!
P.S. Should it not be Hercules 5-ship (small accounting error :D)

It was still pretty full on then, with the mile long static and the even longer queues to get in, but I think its almost outgrown itself now, and due to the nature of aviation now the sheer variety of aircraft just isn’t there. I’ve just pulled out the shots from the year the IAT was at Boscombe Down, when Fairford’s runway was being resurfaced. I’ll scan them and upload them this weekend. There was a very significant visitor that year, and a Mosquito!

Excellent pictures, Growler – thanks for sharing.
RIAT does look a very low key event in your pictures compared with modern events. It’s amazing to see the B-52 and TU-95 in the same picture.
TTFN,
Neil

Indeed it was – there’s a link on the first post to the discussion on the Historic forum where I posted my take on the event, which happened shortly after shot six!

MiG
Was this the year of the MiG collision?

Great shots!! Brings back a lot good memmories!!

Thanks, chaps. I’ve not been to Fairford for a few years. I’m not sure if I can handle the traffic or crowds any more, or the fact that there are no gems like the above there now!

Great photos. I like the Comet. RIAT was certainly more interesting back then with a greater variety of interesting types.

Great shots Growler, the scans have come out well, thanks for sharing. 🙂
I went to my first RIAT just a few years later. Enjoyed the airshow but missed half of it stuck in traffic for hours trying to get in.
I especially like the shots of the Blenheim & Mosquito, Fiat G91 in tiger markings, F-104 Starfighter, the Comet, and the Canberra (which looks like it’s smiling for the camera). The Tu95 is a strange looking beast.

Thanks, Anna. I have many, many more! I have three or four boxes each with several hundred 35mm prints of shows from around 1987 through to 2001.
