Hello all,
Check this thread of the UKAR-board (UK Airshow Review):
http://forums.airshows.co.uk/cgi-bin/ukarboard/ikonboard.cgi?;act=ST;f=1;t=35909 .
For now I cannot find a calendar where dates for UK airshows in 2008 are given, but I do not doubt the source(s)…
Surely this cannot be of any benefit to both RIAT and Flying Legends being held on the same days, i.e. 12/13rd of July 2008???
RIAT has chosen these dates to try and “poach” Farnborough participants. Pity that this time “Fairford” clashes with “Duxford”…

For crying out loud does it really matter? Whatever is said on here its not going to change a single thing. Just be grateful they’ve not been cancelled like so many other events this year.
Spot on….

RIAT and Farnborough agreed dates about 2 or 3 years ago(might be longer), this was so they could share aircraft, both airshows released dates for the next few airshows years ago but im not sure where i saw them.

As I understand it, Farnborough stole/borrowed Riat’s usual date so RIAT stole Legends date….. Very confusing and if you guys think you have problems, try my problem. I am coming over from South Africa! Legends on Saturday, then a quick drive across to RIAT on Saturday evening and RIAT on Sunday then back to Farnborough for the trade days and then back home! Nothing like doing three airshows of that size in 7 days! I’ll need a holiday after all that!
Not sure that’s entirely correct.
Besides, the date for RIAT 2008 was known at least a year before (as, for example on the banners on the way out of RIAT 2007) so why didn’t the Legends organisers think about another date?
Most major UK shows this year happen in just four weeks in July – is this wise?

I think I was lucky as I don’t recall having wet weather at a Fighter Meet. Had one wet RIAT and a wet Gathering Of Warbirds at Wroughton and a few overcast DX and OW displays but on the whole I’ve managed to get dry days at most airshows. Can understand the lack of funding bit though. Airshows like that and Legends are not cheap to run so if the income is not there the show doesn’t happen. It’s a shame but that is the way buisiness has to be done.

That’s a show I’d like to see revived. Anyone know what stopped it? The Fighter Meet was the only place I saw the OV-10 Bronco in flight at close range, often saw the Luftwaffe ones playing when I was in Germany but never closer than about 1-2 Km.
There’s a fascinating article about it in the latest ‘Aircraft Illustrated’. IIRC it was a combination of things including lack of funding and poor income due to bad weather.

It was at th Fitgher meet at North Weald. Lanc, Spit, Hurricane and 2 109’s

Listening in on scanners to ATC is totally illegal in the UK.
The law is universally ignored.
Listen away 🙂
Moggy
I thought it was legal to listen but illegal to transmit if not operating an aircraft and thus blocking the airwaves.

As is usual with Ofcom, nothing is as straight forward as it seems. As a licenced radio ham,I despair at the rules and regulations that are laid down by Ofcom,as they never seem to give a definitive answer.
Try and make sense of the above, but as Moggy says, listen away,as they are unlikely to catch you/do anything about it.
As an example.I have a small Yaesu hand held amateur transceiver, (Amongst many others.) and it also doubles as a scanner, without any modifications whatsoever, and I will be using it to listen in at the Blyton Lancaster flypast on 13th July. (Saying as I’ve organised it,I want to hear what’s going on!!!!) So now you can see where the contradictions come in.

They may have moved the Formula 1 stuff but for us Petrol heads I believe the aviation shows also clash with Classic Le Mans and Goodwood Festival of Speed! Gutted.
By: mike currill - 19th April 2008 at 08:59
Hmm, someoene took along time realising that the dates clash. I knew that back in September. It also clashes with the British F1 Grand Prix so that will confuse us petrol heads. Mind you Legends and the British Grand Prix have clashed for a few years now and the attendance doesen’t seem to have suffered at Legends. I fear that two major airshows on the same weekend will affect attendance at both though.
Further to this post, it appears that the organisers moved the British GP to the weekend before for reasons best known to them.

Back to thread…. did someone say the Vulc will be at leg ends….?
That made me smile this morning.
Incidentally, as you are quoting Jesses Tips, if you ever join the M1 North, at the A14/M6 junction, look at that place on the left hand side of the northbound M1 sliproad, my missus is quite convinced that Jesses lurking in there somewhere, we laugh so much every time we pass it that we find it hard to get into the stream of traffic on the M1.
Sorry, I digress, this business of the clash and the problem as to what will be appearing where or otherwise, has really affected our Hungarian entourage, Solly is not well off and our pidgeon English exchanges have given him doubts as to whether to drastically save up to come over for a Legends event that may be affected by the concurrent Fairford issue, what do I say, I gather that he’s been studying our websites, but I don’t want to put himself out to come over to an event that may not be all there in the true spirit of Legends, with many items missing because of this stupid clash of major events.
Even the steam train events he wants to go to are looking dodgey, perhaps he’d be better off leaving it for a year, assuming the beardy wierdies haven’t got us first.

The map on their website also shows Glasgow as being in Northern Ireland. Perhaps theys should invest in a GPS before they depart…

Glacier Girl is now talking about 2009 but Liberty Belle still planning this year.
I hope that they don’t attempt to land at Framlingham, as the runways were removed a few years ago, they could be in for a bit of a surprise.
Perhaps they should check with Google Earth before setting off.
