Did anyone else go to this years RIAT?
I know in the past it has got a dull ‘zoom woosh roar’ reputation but this year was different. Well, on the ground anyway.
The 100years of flight exhibition was excelent. You walked round it chronologically. Starting off with 4 pre WW1 replicas, then many WW1 aeroplanes including the GENUINE Be2B from Hendon, then onto between the wars Moths and Miles, then WW2, with the previously airworthy Spitfire prototype replica, 3 more spits and 2 hurricanes, blenheim, lanc, Dc2, 2 Dakotas, Dc4, then some TFC stuff (Wildcat, P40, P51 – Twilight Tear) – then a Skyraider plus many more. Then onto jets with the Prototype Meteor from Cosford, 2 other Meteors, Vampire, Venom, T33, F86, Canberra, JPs, Gnats, and Hunter. Then things got REALLY interesting, the Swift that is/was under restoration to fly, the SR53 from Cosford, Javelin, Lightning T5, P1127, Phantom, Harrier (the old sort – GR3). Then the Navy, Sea Hawk, Scimitar (wow), Sea Fury (yes, outside), then a Dragonfly, Wasps, and Wessi, then the Army historic flight, and then current serving aircraft, right up to a brand new Typhoon (just to keep snapper happy?:D ) in 17sqn marks.
Some of the above had been repainted specially for the event.
A fantastic effort by all involved. It was even laid out to allow photography (but as I’m on slide, there’s no way I can put them on this site this millenium).
I know RIAT is supposed to be all about current serving aircraft, but this was fantastic.
Just a shame that the only historics in the flying were the Rolls-Royce Spitfire and the EADS Ju52 though.
What did anyone else think?

P.S. Is Wessi a suitable word to describe more than one Wessex?

Sean,
yes, sorry. Completely forgot about the Albatross. I was in a tent full of pre WW1 aeroplanes at the time and missed it. It’s a lovely aeroplane, I’ve seen it before at the 2002 ILA Berlin.
I didn’t count the Fouga Magister as it’s still serving but you’re right, it is historic. Unfortunately, having gone only on saturday, I didn’t get to see the Iskras this time but yes, they’re historic as well.
It wasn’t actually a complaint, just a comment, any lack in the flying was more than made up for by the static display which had fantastic content and a good layout.
Even the blue cones seem to have backed off a bit, which as a keen photographer is great news!!
One of the best RIATs (or IATs) I’ve been to, and I’ve been to every one since 1979.

Sorry gents you’re all wrong. The plural of Wessex is of course WALTERS :p

Meteor Prototype
Glad you like the profile, Coanda, one of about 50 for the next Modeller’s Datafile I’m working on.
Lines are much sharper in the original, of course, as this is a low res version to fit the board’s limit for uploading. Simple, really, it all depends on resolution, the higher the better. I work at 450dpi CMYK, at 1/48th scale. You need a lot of ‘horses’ to pull that!! My souped-up G4 can take it, no problem.
Cheers,
Airart

I would say a white thong is being worn. It wasn’t Snapper in disguise was it or could it have been Droptank?
By: Bluebird Mike - 22nd July 2003 at 20:27
…and the plural of thong is of course, knickers! 😀

The plural of Wessex is Wessex, as with Lynx, Fish etc
By: Bluebird Mike - 22nd July 2003 at 19:32
Hmm, as an expert in such matters, I have to agree with our lovely Spitfire polisher there, looks like a black thong under the white strides. Tut!
Not sure if it’s the correct black thong to wear under that shade of white though, I’ll have to look it up in ‘Camoflage Schemes For Crumpet Vol 9’.
Got any more like this?!!! 😉

ok, well maybe I reckon it should be brown and green because I have seen this aircraft lots of times too, I dont have the book your referring to richard unfortunately.
wonderful side view tho richard.
how do you get those panel lines so subtle?
I think the plural of Wessex is Wessi

Actually Willow, there was an Albatross B2 at the start of the flying display.. OK I know it was a replica, but it was beautifully replicated – the only thing I could find wrong was that the original had a claw brake in the middle of the axle, and the replica didn’t. (Though of course the engine wasn’t a Mercedes 6-cylinder in-line – it was a Walter-Minor 165PS) The aeroplane came from the Aircraft Production and Flight Museum at Fürstenwalde, near Berlin, and it flew, well, just beautifully.
Also, you might consider the Team Iskry (7x TS-11 Iskra) quite historic, to say nothing of Paul Rorive and the lovely Fouga Magister.
Glad you enjoyed the 100 Years of (Powered) Flight exhibition
sean
PS On mature consideration, I think the plural of Wessex is Wesseces. (oh, the benefits of a classical education)

Cargomaster – Thanks, great shot, hopefully I’ve got a similar one at the processors somewhere!!
DIGBY – Sorry to mention those nasty jet things but some of them were quite old you know (OK some of them weren’t). My apologies. As a penance, I’ll go for a look round Old Warden at my next opportunity.
coanda – I too, am convinced that the Prototype Meteor should be Green and Brown, but this may purely be because I have seen this particular aeroplane, in this scheme, many times.
Yak11fan – I think, prehaps, Jay-Knee, was somewhere else…….

Of course. 😀As it’s after the watershed, I’ll post this one up. In our semi-leathered state, the four of us were trying to work out whether this one had gone commando for the occasion. Jury’s still out…
With apologies to Ashley and our other female members of course. 😮
It looks suspiciously like the lady in question has committed the cardinal sin of wearing black underwear (looks like a thong) under white clothing (as all fashionistas know is just not the done thing :D)
Now I have to explain to my colleagues why exactly they caught me with my nose pressed up again the screen peering at a lady’s derierre…well today could be interesting 😉

P.S. And great pics of the aircraft Steve, this way I can feel like I went to RIAT but without the traffic and sunburn 🙂

For coanda
This is the typical finish for Meteor prototypes. For further details see ‘Camouflage and Markings Number 11’, by J. Goulding, p. 242. This shows the second prototype, DG203/G, with the bullet fairing added, but without the ventral fin/bumper, and clear canopy aft of opening section (it was solid on DG202/G)

You mean he still doesn’t know what happened to Janie?????? 😀 😎 😎 😎 😎
By: DIGBY - 21st July 2003 at 21:30
YAK 11,
I bet it was a RIOT. I can just imagine A L running around pulling his hair out trying to find out what happened to “JANIE”:D 😀 😀 😀
By: Yak 11 Fan - 21st July 2003 at 20:36
Whats this RIOT stuff all about then?
I saw Janie at the weekend, may have been there, if not most likely it was somewhere else.
By: DIGBY - 21st July 2003 at 20:04
Willow,
you were doing great at the start of your thread, bloody great in fact till you reached the point where you started mentioning Parrafin burners, Was “JANIE” there for Alexis?
By: Cargomaster - 21st July 2003 at 19:40
As promised
By: coanda - 21st July 2003 at 18:30
I err, though that the prototype one, ie this one, was?
By: airart - 21st July 2003 at 16:05
Great pics.
However, whoever painted that Meteor prototype should be shot! Meteors were NEVER finished in Dark Earth/Dark Green camouflage, but in Ocean Grey/Dark Green. Moreover that band around the fuselage is a funny colour of Sky! What a pity, such a pretty aeroplane.
