RIAT Saturday No Tickets On Sale On The Day!

I understand from the RIAT website that they will not now be selling tickets on the day. This means it is an advance ticket only event!

http://www.airtattoo.com/airtattoo/Newsroom/news/Newsroom/NO_ON_THE_DAY_SATURDAY_TICKETS

In my opinion this is stupid. I have only ever bought tickets on the day (I’ve been going to IAT since 1979 and have never bought an advance ticket).

I’d already decided to go to Legends instead, but if I had still been in 2 minds then this would have decided it for me

Bye Bye RIAT

Well, just to remind you that Duxford and Flying Legends welcomes all, you can even enrol in The Friends of the Fighter Collection, get a free flightline walk and £4.00 off the Legends 2008 DVD, oh and none of those nasty, noisy jetty things either.

As they say, a no-brainer 🙂

Seconded! 😀

Cheers

If possible, and you can travel light ( prob no young children in tow) then the best way to arrive is by bike. Chuck your bike in the car, park somewhere (free) about 5 miles away, and sail through the overheating traffic jams. Even if you cant get in, you are flexible to move quickly round the perimeter, and are sure to find somewhere to watch procedings.

I’m at a loss to know why people go to these events. It sounds like you have to shell out megabucks to spend most of the day driving and queuing, walking miles from the car park to the spectators’ enclosure and then hoping that you have got there early enough to ensure that a family of beanpoles have not installed themselves in front of you. Are there outbreaks of airshow rage? Wouldn’t it just be cheaper and less aggravating to watch the whole thing on satellite TV and buy your photos of the event online? It does seem as if the UK air show scene has got out of all proportion. And I wonder why I no longer live in the UK!

Cloud Cuckoo Land

They seem to think I’m going to shell out £100+ and advance book when the weather is like this? Not that I see how I could get advance tickets at this late date anyway.
Obviously a case of s*d the public….the organisers may well rot in hell but I guarantee they’ll be clutching their (free) drink.
I seem to recall the whole idea of RIAT was to raise money for charity – is this still the objective?

The A380 is due to do flypasts at Manchester and Liverpool airports after leaving Fairford on Saturday ,then display at the Wirral Show. It will then land at Farnborough in readiness fror next week’s show.

4am! Where are you travelling from?

John

Weston-super-Mare :diablo:

Was being a bit  but then it’s not going to be much later than that – the gates open at 7:30 (I think) and I want to get my deckchairs positioned nicely at the ‘fence line’ in the enclosure – before the usual family of 12 with their wind-break and gazebo get set up in front of me 😮 – though this year they have (supposedly) banned these, along with step ladders and cherry pickers for the ‘my zoom lens is bigger than yours’ brigade.

Still, the weather for Sunday is looking better than Saturday (at the moment). 😀

The A380 was going to do a wheels down flypast over Liverpool until they realised how many they could loose!

Finally, Capital of Culture 2008 stuff has served a useful purpose 😉 Though I will be at RIAT lol

To be fair, I seem to remember the organisers announcing this shortly after last years show after the airfield was full on the Saturday, but much quieter on the Sunday due to people listening to the weather forecast. Their only mistake was not formally communicating this in good time, so assume they left this as an open decision while they monitored ticket sales?

Personally, I couldn’t decide which event to attend so I’ve bought advanced tickets for both 🙂 We’re leaving Newcastle at lunch time tomorrow, doing Fairford Sat, Duxford Sun, then home!

The theory of advance tickets is OK if you are able to plan such things in advance, but unless you can 100% guarantee being able to go, it’s a risk to fork out in advance.

Not everyone has the luxury of be able to plan such things in advance. I was thinking about going but work and family things mean as always it would be a final decision made a day or maybe two before hand.

So, that decision has been made for me…….

So, if I can go somewhere this weekend it will definately be Legends now.

I will feel sorry for those that don’t know about this and leave early and sit in traffic only to be turned away…….

When I bought my advance tickets, there was definitely a bit on the website that gave the prices for the advance tickets and the ‘on the gate’ tickets, which were over £10 more expensive. This is something they have recently decided on, presumably based on the advance ticket sales.

We always book into one of the enclosures too, just to ensure a reasonable view as the crowd line gets too much of a bun fight … so overall (including £3 for sending our tickets out by 2nd class post), the cost of our day out at RIAT is >£100.

Think we will be setting of at about 4am to try and avoid the inevitable Police traffic management farce that seems to contribute to most of the snarl-ups.

Edit: Presumably everyone wants to see the Airbus 380 which is only flying on the Saturday…

will the A380 be there on sunday though? even if its not flying

I think they did it because loads more people have bought Saturday tickets in advance than Sunday ones, meaning that people without advance tickets would probably have to be turned away on the gate anyway. Doesn’t bother me anyway, I got my tickets in March!

I think it is blatantly obvious what is happening here… Over the years, RIAT has become far more of a corporate event, and much less of a public airshow (IMO). This seems to me to be a great way to keep the crowds down on Saturday so that corporate world can have their own little show, and then let the masses in on Sunday… Pack them in like sardines, while the corporate big wigs sleep off their hangover from the night before. Meanwhile the Vulcan and F22 will make it a show to remember, and all the magazines will tell you what a fantastic day it was, because, if you have a ticket, or you go on the Sunday, then it will be a fantastic day. However, Mr and Mrs Smith with little Jonny and sister have just spent 6 hours in a car only to be told “Sorry.. If you aint got a ticked then you aint coming in”. RIAT then try and turn them away, but by now they’re already into the one way system and they cant get out because of the masses behind them. It’s now 1 o’clock and the police insist that they open the gates to elevate the problem that has just repeated itself 50,000 times as people from all over the country descend on sleepy Fairford.

I could understand this if they announced it months ago, but to do so just a few days before the show is an absolute disgrace… And why only Saturday? Probably because of the above!

Sorry guys… Rant over!

Just to help the traffic situation even further, I understand that the F-22 will be flying at about 6pm both days. As this is one of the main attractions, most people will wait to see it, and then EVERYONE will try to leave at the same time.

All good fun

Willow
