It is a disgrace that an air ambulence service has to be funded in this way. In europe and Scotland they are all govt funded yet the ones in England / Wales get no help at all. (apart from the paramedic from NHS and at least one organisation went to court to get that) Not every county in England / Wales has one either – Hampshire and 1 other (not sure which) do not and so have to rely on other counties if one is needed.

Good to see the hamster is on the mend though.

Why should you be so surprised by the lack of funding, in a few years time the RAF Air / Sea Rescue service will have been farmed out to the private sector, all in the name of saving money!

I am waiting expectantly for the tax rebate we will all be getting from all this money the government keep saving.

What would Clarkson and Captain Slow make of this???

The Hamster lined up for Countdown
Top Gear crash victim Richard Hammond is being lined up as the next presenter of the vintage teatime word quiz Countdown. The star, currently recovering from a 300mph crash, could take over from Des Lynham after Des announced he’d like to quit at the end of the year.

The show would see a change of pace for Richard – known as “the Hamster” – from his life in the fast lane as presenter of the boys’ toys car show. Des has said he is leaving Countdown after 18 months because of the gruelling trek from his home in Sussex to Leeds where the show is filmed.

Richard is making a good recovery from a horrific crash behind the wheel of a jet-powered dragster at the Elvington airfield last month. But he’s not the only big name that Countdown producers are considering to join maths boffin Carol Vorderman on Channel 4’s longest-running show.

Also in the frame are Sky Sunrise presenter Eamonn Holmes and Deal Or No Deal star Noel Edmonds. But it’s the Hamster which tops the show’s shortlist. A source told the Daily Star Sunday: “If he keeps up his recovery, Richard would be the ideal choice to replace Des. But he will face tough competition from Eamonn and Noel.”

36-year-old Richard would be the youngest presenter of the show which was fronted for years by TV legend Richard Whiteley. The biggest stumbling block in his way might be the amount of mickey-taking he’ll get from Top Gear co-host and pal Jeremy Clarkson if he moves from fast cars to the rather more sedate surroundings of Countdown. The show is popular with the over-60s purple-rinse brigade, most of whom Clarkson would like to see banned from the road for driving too slow!

Like most essential services not funded by our taxes,it takes an incident like the hamsters crash to highlight the importance of these services.I agree that funding needs to be found and the stealth tax of GATSO could be one but at some stage the government needs to realise that funding needs to be seriously looked at, 200k wont last long.

I totally agree Helecopter Ambalance’s have proved their worth countless times in saving people’s lives, They been used in Major incidents to good effect as well as more normal accidents, How many people have survived a accident due to these helecopters, Even London only has one, Surely the government should be backing such services with OUR money.

What’s the latest progress report on the young man????

The last i heard was Doctors reckon he will be back to his “OLD” self in 6 months, Lets hope so the world needs the Hamster.
I am still puzzled by the so called do-gooders who want top gear banned, I figure these are the same people against airshows etc too, We can not let them win i am sure a majority of people do not want to live in a grey and faceless world,Life is about adventure and excitement.

I wish the Hamster a speedy recovery and return to the show where he fits so well with the rest of the team. He is a truly good presenter and displays a great love for cars. Hurry back Hammond, you are missed!

With regards to the Hampster and the cash generated towards a second Yorkshire Air Ambulance, this news must have come as a bitter blow:

I heard yesterday on 5 live that they were axing it whilst Richard was still “affected” by what has happened, then it is to return, this is my understanding anyway

what are your feelings on the unconfirmed (?) reports of the axing of Top Gear as detailed in the enclosed?

I think it would be a shame. If it’s on and there’s nothing better to do I’ll watch it and it can be quite funny and quite irritating in turns.

But it’s a popular show so why on earth axe it just ‘cos Hammond got hurt? Makes no sense to me.

Mind you nothing the Daily Mail prints is particularly accurate so I’d guess the programme is safe as houses.

We dont have anything!!!!

count your blessing’s ..we dont have ANY real air ambulance service here, only those that are provided by the Air Corps somewhat limited “general” helicopter resources .and they arnt trained or equipped . 😡

and with the state of Ireland’s road network….

Have to agree though that the lack of government funding for such a vital service is a disgrace.

Havent seen much in the line of updates on Richard’s condition over the last few days but was glad to read that he is making what appears to be a remarkable recovery.

The other air ambulance services are all busily looking around for runways in their areas in the hope they can persuade Top Gear to move there.
