RIP Caradoc Williams FIEE

Yesterday’s local newspaper, the Cambridge Edition, has the death notice of scientist and engineer Caradoc Williams, who passed away on the 26th of February 2009 at Resthaven retirement home. He was 101.

Williams was awarded the Wakefield Gold Medal in 1957 by the IAeE for developing navigation methods for civil aviation. He was UK born and retired to NZ in 1968 (long retirement!).

There’s other stuff on Google relating to his work with navigation, noting really about him though as far as I can see.

Google throws up his 100th birthday celebrations here

Which means the recent article may not have been about his birthday as that was six months ago and I don’t think it was that long ago. Not sure.

Also the National Archives in the UK has a file on one of his inventions here:

And an Aeroplane article here mentions him

I personally have nothing more I’m afraid. I do recall around Christmas time he was featured in the paper, I think perhaps marking his 101st birthday and it briefly mentioned his involvement with air navigation systems. I was going to keep the cutting but somebody threw the paper away. I could see if the editor can look out the article for me in their computer system, but it’s a longshot.

I was kind of hoping others may have heard of him and could offer more.
