To be fair, Arthur, yours is the only posting on this thread so far that actually contains the word “condolences”.

In my opinion, it is always right and proper to mourn the passing of any great artist.

Their passing diminishes Humanity and thus, by extension, diminishes all of us.

Fair point, but i find such open displays of grief/loss by anonymous people on websites a little corny – if not downright hypocritical. Pavarotti is dead. I’m sure it will be a great loss for those who enjoyed him as a person, but for those enjoying his music there’s plenty of recordings that will live on. It’s not that any future gigs will be missed, since the guy wasn’t performing anymore.

I find it sad that people seem to need celebrities to make their own life interesting, and dead celebrities seem to be the most effective. You may be a bitter old tart from Scarborough, but crying over Diana’s death did give your life just that bit of glamour

Feeling regret he won’t be able to perform anymore is fair enough. But his death being “a loss for the world in general”? Nope, not in my humble opinion.

Yehudi Menuhin was one i definately regretted passing on. I had tickets for two days later…

I totally agree, Yes i never knew the man personally nor met him, But he was a icon for opera and a true talent, The fact is he will never be fogotten. He was a amazing character and a legend in his own right.
Lets be honest we are in a age where celebrity and talent are not connected anymore and nobodies become heroes just by appearing in crappy TV shows, Why should we not praise and mourn REAL talent?.

…But then again i must be more sensible because of all of Pavarotti’s relatives coming to this forum to gracefully accept our condolances…

luciano pavarotti’s ability to flit between pop and opera became his trademark, followed by his now synonymous to his name rendition of puccini’s nessun dorma (no one shall sleep). one of the worlds greatest tenors sadly missed.

Why rip Pavarotti if he’s already dead?

I do like a bit of opera now and then, but i never liked Pavarotti. But then again i must be more sensible because of all of Pavarotti’s relatives coming to this forum to gracefully accept our condolances.

The guy was suffering from cancer. In a lot of those instances, death is merciful.

Yes a sad day indeed, I am not a fan of opera but he somehow was able to bring opera to the masses and made people including myself listen and enjoy.
You had one of the best voices you could imagine and was if the words are right a “larger than life character” that made him all the more special.
His death is a sad loss to music and the world in general but his voice will live on for many many years.

RIP

A pity.
While not a huge opera expert, his rendition of Pucciniโ€™s “Nessun Dorma” always moved me.

Whilst never been a big fan of that particular type of music, I could admire the talent on display all the same.

Same here I am not a fan off that type off music but I do like it when he sings. I was guessing he would die sometime thisd week aswel after seening the news last night

RIP Luciano Pavarotti ๐Ÿ™

As a young guy, I must admit I was a fan of Pavarotti. So I was a bit shocked to hear about his death. I knew he was ill, so the news didn’t came as a complete suprise. It makes me feel sad, but at least I have a lot of nice CD’s. His voice will stay in my memory forever.

Thank you.

Yip , came in from work in the wee small hours to hear he had pancreatic cancer and then he was gone just like that. Whilst never been a big fan of that particular type of music, I could admire the talent on display all the same.

I liked the song he sang with Bono on the U2 ‘Passengers’ project back in 1995.

I’d heard on the news last night that he wasn’t doing well – kinda expected this, to be honest.

RIP.
