Having just taken the plunge to become a freelance sports journalist (mainly broadcast), it’s been suggested to me that I should look into writing for aviation publications to earn a little extra corn. Has anyone got any experience of this, or knows how to go about it?

Looks like you’re well qualified for the job of aviation journalist! A bit like the (senior) author of the News article in this months FP who gives the two ‘Last Corsair’ pilots as being 60 and 61 years old – a bit to young to be WWII pilots methinks 😉

I read it to mean that it was 60 and 61 years respectively since the two pilots mentioned flew that particular aircraft.
I’m probably wrong though.

The only way you’ll make money by writing is a ransom note …

One thing is try and do some original research. The number of books that I have read that are clearly simply based on other books is incredible. Many myths get perpetuated this way.

Rite of passage.
…and before anyone picks me up on the typo in the thread title, it’s meant to be “and” not “at”…
😉
Invest in a spell checker.

ha ha…
Yes, thanks. And there’s quite a few here who do. Top tip: don’t go into it for the money.
Assume you’ll ‘earn’ less than you spend on getting the stuff together.
Several forumites pull my leg (rightly, writely?) about me saying “there’s no money in publishing.” Still, none of them have been seen waving wads about from published articles, so I rest my case!
The competition in aviation photography is cut-throat – the advantage of writing over photographing is it’s easier to get published, there’s less people who can and want to do it. Have a look at the mags and you’ll note a relatively small number of byelines.
It’s fun, but don’t expect to come home with more cash than you set out.
Pick your fave magazine
Look at a couple of ‘good’ articles
Figure out what makes them good
Pick something that you think they’d be interested in
Write it up, send it in – feel free to contact the Ed, but don’t hold your breath.
Do find out deadlines, and make sure you hit them. Write to length.

Embellish as much as you can, stay away from fact, fiction works much better, oh and wherever possible add just a little bit of sex. But being a journalist you’d know that 😀
