RMN is set to purchased submarines by year end and French DCN seems to be the most likely winner in the bidding process. It took about 10 years for the RMN to get a submarines in their inventory after various deal failed to materialised due to the Asian economic crisis. In 1990 Malaysia were very keen to buy Swedish A19 subs but the deal did not go through. With Singapore decision to buy the Swedish A14(A19 could be just around the corner),it is very unlikely for RMN to get the same boat. The deal for the subs are conducted on a G to G basis hence various offset, economic plus Malaysian Airlines landing rights in France were put on the table.RMN is expected to buy one refurbished AGOSTA A90B for training while waiting for the newly built SCORPENE SSK.Initial 2 units are to be purchased with another 4 on option. The deal for the 3 subs cost app.euro 1.2Billion.The subs wont be operating in the shallow water according to the MINDEF official but RMN would use it to patrol SOUTH CHINA SEA and the INDIAN OCEAN.A specially built subs base(inside a cave)in Sabah+3 more bases in Langkawi(for INDIAN OCEAN OPS),Lumut and the Mersing special forces centre each are capable to handle more than 4 subs at a time.SCORPENE SSK is a modern AIP(MESMA) boat equipped with the latest sensor and weapons such as the EXOCET SM39.
