RN Historic Flight

What is the situation of the flight for next year, i keep hearing rumours of lack of finance and was wondering what they would fly next year and how the various aircraft were doing.
Swordfish – how many, 1,2 3??
Sea Hawk – Jet pipe situation?
Firefly – Flying again yet ?
Sea Fury – Engine situation ?
Any others ??

The ‘Fly is airworthy and its next display after Biggin will be at Kemble on the 15th June.

The Fury is awaiting its Centaurus back from rebuild by an outside contractor. They hope to have it flying by the tail end of the season.

With regards to “Princess Elizabeth” I very much doubt we’ll see her flying this season, but would love to be proved wrong 🙂

Thanks for the info even if it wasnt quite what I was hoping for! I would very much like to see a Gannet flying if only for the fact it might be noticed and remind some of the plant life in the Admiralty that a rotary wing platform just isnt sufficient to provide thorough, high endurance AEW coverage to the fleet…grrr!

Jonesy- the propellor for the Gannet was finished a long time ago. The Gannet wasn’t that airworthy allegedly when she flew in to Sandtoft. Don’t hold your breath on seeing her in the sky next year if at all.

Gannet AEW Mk3 XL502 (G-BMYP)

Hello Gents,

I’ve been following the current FOAEW project being run by the DPA for the new UK CVF carriers fairly closely and it led me to have a look at the last fixed wing type to provide the service for the Fleet.

Naturally my first stop was the excellent Thunder and Lightning site and lo it provided enough detail to keep me happy for a while. Whilst reading I noticed a commentry on a near-airworthy example held by Imperial Aviation with a note suggesting that it may be returned to the display circuit sometime this year.

I was wondering if anyone knew whether this had happened or knew of the Gannets’ participation in any display’s next year?

Absolutely…..mind you I’m one who feels the flight should have taken on a Buccaneer S.2 on retirement for returning to Naval config., not to mention the Sea Vixen, as companions for the Sea Hawk. There was also the missed opputunity to have ‘ear-marked’ a Falklands combat veteran FRS.1 Sea Harrier for future use as well.
I know….money, or rather lack of it, same old chesnut!!!!

Hello

Here’s some news on some of the RNHF fleet

The latest on the Firefly is that it is close to a test flight so will be back on the circuit for next year.

The Sea Hawk WV908 jet-pipe repair is complete but the aircraft is awaiting reassembly, which will be done after the Firefly project is completed.

Swordfish II LS326’s corrosion problems are still being rectified but it is hoped to be finished in time for 2002.

Sea Fury VR930’s Centaurus is being rebuilt after the aircraft suffered an engine failure in August 2001.

The third Stringbag, III NF389 is undergoing rebuild at BAE-Systems Brough.
