RNAS Yeovilton

Went down to the RNAS display today, must be the first time in about 20 years since I went to a display at Yeovilton and I have to say I really enjoyed it.
I was disapointed on arrival to hear that the Firefly could not fly due to a lack of prop, particularly as this was my main driver for going there, this was kept very quiet so as not to lose punters i suppose.
However the day was good despite this:-
Nice colection of twenty vintage GA aircraft ranging from Austers, Tiggers,Luscombes up to the lovely DH Heron all bimbled in during the morning.
Main display had Danish and Dutch F16’s, Sea Harrier pair,Tonado (RAF F3 and German Navy), simulated airfiled attack by several Harriers, several Jaguars and a lone Belgique F16, FRADU hawks, solo Hawk (RAF), Tucano, Nimrod,Army Merlin, Navy Merlin,Lynx and Gazelle’s making up the modern stuff.
Historic stuff well represented by Charlie Brown displaying HAC’s Spitfire Mk5 abslolutely beautifuly,TFC’s Corsiar and Wildcat(flown as a pair), RNHF’s Stringbag and THT’s Avenger as the Torpedo representation,Vampire and Venom (Source Jets),NavalPR11 Hunter, a superb display by the Sea Vixen, nice little WW1 Scenario with Neuport 17,Junkers ??(Little Mono wing fighter)and 3 SE5A reps,a pair of Westland Wasps(new to me), DH FoxMoth, Buker Jungman.
Aerobatics from a couple of Extra 300’s, Freefall Parajump from a Seaking.
All rounded off with a first class hostile assault scenario involving RN Jetsream, 5 Harriers (one ‘lauched’ from the ski jump),4 lynx,2 Chinook,7 or 8 Seakings, umpteen ground troops, some biggish guns, a pair of small tanks and other vehicles. Most of this appeared underslung or in cargo nets on the numerous visits by the 12or so helicopters.
So all in all a good day, £20 quid though !!.

Does that mean it will be departing Yeovilton early on Saturday? If so, that means it won’t be available for static at Yeovilton at all – as no display on Sunday.

You mean to tell me it has been test flown and nobody mentioned it 🙁

Wake up at the back there! 😉

Still, if the weather is better tomorrow, I’ll turn up. Thing is, isn’t it off to Biggin Hill – or is it going to Biggin on Sunday?

The Sea Hawk didn’t fly today but should be flying tomorrow with the Sea Fury 🙂

RE: RNAS Yeovilton

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 24-09-02 AT 09:56 PM (GMT)]Hi Philo.

Would be happy to chat about the website I made, its pretty simple(imperative for me!)

I have MSN, AIM or just drop me a line on the ol’ PM facility whatever, is fine…..

I did not get out onto the pan, I am nowhere near having the ability to do that, am just a humble enthusiast.

What I do have is a 70mm-210 mm lens.

I used this for all of those shots and just moved closer to the weird aircraft shown below, this allowed me to get shots of the aircraft individually.

True enough with the sunshine. Its unfortunate as the runway wont change so we are stuck with it, especially as its going to be every september. it would be great if they made it two months earlier, the sun would be much higher in the sky. This was very noticeable from the layout for everything else(which also isnt going to change!) Its a pity but if you think about it(and I dont do that often enough) you take photo’s up sun, looking at the aircraft, making lovely backlighting.

I havent got all of my flying photo’s back yet, and am dreading anything right of stage center just being a silouhette. oh well, live and learn.

RE: RNAS Yeovilton

Coanda,
Were you out on the ramp to take those, because I struggled to get shots of the Corsiar and Vamp in isolation of each other from either side. Also the light was difficult, very hazy and down the lens most of the day.
I’m interested in your web site as I am preparing to do a similar thing with all of my material.
Perhaps we could talk off forum .

RE: RNAS Yeovilton

Ant- Many thanks,
Someone else has just told me that its a Flybaby but with no other info, so I’ll check out the site you attached.
We don’t seem to see much of this team at displays, shame,I wonder why that is ?. They also have the Sopwith Triplane if memory serves.

RE: RNAS Yeovilton

Hi again,
The ‘Junkers’ is a modified Bowers FlyBaby, registered to John Day as G-ANPV,and operated as part of the Great War Display Team. This machine was mentioned in Pilot magazine a few months ago,and as I read it,it doesn’t mention anything about an optional biplane configuration, the FlyBaby has always been flown as a monoplane. The look-alike represents a Junkers D1 ‘Trench Strafer’,an all metal machine designed for ground attack, one of the first in the world, and also featuring armour protection for the machines most vulnerable areas. There’s more on the FlyBaby and the ‘Junkers’ at:

Hope this is of interest 🙂

RE: RNAS Yeovilton

Hi Philo,
I saw something about this machine a couple of months back. It’s only just been built, which explains why it’s never been seen before. From what I remember, the head of the dummy gunner is linked up to the rudder,so that the dummy’s head and the rudder move in concert! I’ll dig the info out and give you a precise name for the machine, which escapes me at the mo.I’m a bit dubious about it being convertable to a biplane though.

RE: RNAS Yeovilton

I have since discovered that the little mono-plane masquerading as a WW1 German fighter with a dummy in the rear seat is a homebuild called an ‘easy… something or other’that can be quickly converted to a bi-plane if need be.I’ve not come across this before, does anyone know any more ?

RE: RNAS Yeovilton

Phil,

Sean Maffett made the odd ricket throughout the day, but was more-or-less on the button.

Yes the Vampire is owned by Source but is reportedly up for sale.
The Hunter PR.11 cannot do a Blue Note, because it is a converted F4 and it doesn’t have any gun ports on it 🙂
I thought the display pilot put on a excellent show in it myself.

The Wasp singleton display has been about since 2000 but this is the first time I have ever seen them as a duo, and hopefully not the last.

RE: RNAS Yeovilton

Hi Stringbag,
Thanks for the notes, I must admit I did not fully hear Shaun Maffit announcing all of the operators as I had partly shut off from the PA because of the bloody awful music playing some of the time. But I was right in saying Source with the Vamp, wasn’t I ?.
Yes it was good to see the PR.11 Hunter, although I have to say Rod Dean would probably have given the display a bit more and would certainly have found the ‘Blue note’.
The Wasps, how long have they been displaying ? because I thought they made a very interesting and pleasant change.
Regarding Charlie Brown in the Spit, I have to stick by my original analysis, I thought it was flown perfectly, choreographed (to fit the superb music in this case),he made the Spit look graceful yet majestic. I doesn’t all have to be in the style of an aerobatic champ, these old girls need a lot of TLC and this was done to perfection.A late english summer day, blue sky, broken cloud, Edward Elgar’s patriotic music playing and a Mk VIB Merlin engined Spitfire gently rolling around the sky, sorry but it does it for me.

Hi, I enjoyed Yeovilton too, despite having to wait in the cold to get in. I think it was Brian Smith in the Corsair and Pete Kynsey in the Wildcat. Very nice formation flying.

Couple of corrections – the Venom is owned by Kennet Aviation, along with one of the two Wasps that participated (the camoed example).
I thought the Spit V was flown very sedately myself, but still a very tight routine. Liked the Hunter Flying Club Hunter PR.11 and the Vixen, but being ex-FRADU aeroplanes I would 🙂

Sounds like it was a good show. Philo – do you know who flew the TFC Corsair and Wildcat? Thanks in advance.
