I just finished watching the “Hawker Sea Fury” video about the RN Historic Flight. Thanks to everyone for helping me find this WONDERFUL tape (that is made of unobtainium here in the US).
My question is, what has happened to the RNHF since the loss of their FB.11 and Mk. 20? Are they still operating a heritage flight? I remember something about a Firefly crash last year, was that them?
This has probably been covered in past threads, but thanks for any help.
Cheers,
Steve Patterson

In the black and white picture is the woman on the right (but one) Anthea Redfern?
Yes sir, by George, that IS hottie Anthea Redfern. 😀 She was a Playboy Club Bunny in 1969, named Sasha. In 1970, Hef flew in on “Black Bunny,” and these girls got to see him and his Bunny Jet. The brit flag bunny costume was made for Bunny Diana Turner, standing beside Anthea. She wore it to the International Playboy Bunny Contest in Chicago. On her way to Chicago she tried to take some pictures wearing it, but was kicked out of Heathrow airport. Anthea loved the brit flag bunny costume, so Bunny Diana (Deana) let her wear it to meet Hef. Anthea won “Miss London,” in 1970. You can read more about Diana Turner, and the “Black Bunny” jet here : http://forum.keypublishing.com/showthread.php?t=79564

http://www.facebook.com/pages/Royal-Navy-Historic-Flight/214084448635613 If you read the first comment it reads “Good news – a large wooden crate containing a centaurus engine has turned up in the RNHF hangar today. Before long we’ll have VR930 in one piece again”
Good news RNHF look forward to seeing FB.11 in the skies again !
Been missing her from the air show circuit for too long.

. At our weights no problem…
Pilot or aeroplane?

A real problem with high octane bang juice is the availability of Tetra Ethyl Lead in quantity and fact that it is almost a banned substance in many eco [??] countries like OZ…100LL works fine and keeps the plugs clean if you use reduced boost. We use 44in in the TBM down from 52.5in in the book. At our weights no problem…

I pay AU$1.15 per litre right now..or US$3.10 per USG….
The Avenger burns 300lts per hour in the cruise and a gazilion times that on takeoff etc…

I would say, on average, about $2.85-$3.00 per gallon in the US for 100LL. Of course, some FBOs are charging close to $4.00 per gallon.
This is why I had so much fun watching Patty fill a car with fuel.
In the UK 100LL is about £1.00 per litre, so £3.57 per US gallon. At Popham it is £1.03 litre. Compared to motor fuel prices the US are being ripped off almost as much as us.

Just out of interest.. for the uneducated amongst us, i.e. ..me….how much does a gallon of 100LL cost in $$ or ££ ?
Dezz 🙂

The only place in the world that brews 115/145 is Eslmere Port IIRC. This is a turn around from WWII when all high PN fuel came from the USA. I am sure it will be available for some time. There are replacements available but if what I have read is correct 100LL is not quite as good as its Lead based equivalent at the rich mixture rating. Also some of the replacement additives can have detrimental effects at prolonged high power outputs.

In display, with the power up, the fuel burn is probably closer to two gallons per minute. I don’t have the figures for the Centaurus, but my plane burns 85gph in cruise, and well over 200gph at takeoff power.
As for the fuel, I know the RNHF had to commision a special batch for their Sea Fury. I have no idea of the cost, but at Reno the 115/145 race fuel is about double the price of 100LL.
The need for their own fuel will no doubt have an impact on how often the RNHF Sea Fury is able to display next year. I know other Centaurus Sea Furies have used 100LL in the past, so I wonder if this is a precaution during the initial engine break-in period, or if the RNHF are worried about detonation in the normal operation of this airplane.

Same as a Mustang then…..
By: mmitch - 11th October 2004 at 16:19
the reason for the royal navy fuel bouser is they are running on 130 octane fuel and duxford could only supply 100LL so they bought their own.
On that subject, what is the likely availability of 130 Octane and similar fuels in the future? There can’t be many aircraft that use it, although I heard the commentator say the Fury uses a gallon a minute in the cruise!
mmitch.

Engines are a bit like colour schemes sir! what does yours have??
I’m rebuilding a Spit XIV and I’ve been bollocked for using some AN hardware etc..OK should I also use 1944 spec oil? I’m happy to see them all rebuilt and flying…a Sea Fury with or without Mr Bristol’s engine is still one heck of a nice plane. PS: One for sale here WITH a Centaurus…

I’m not sure that the one in Booker will ever make it into the air
Especially as IIRC.. … the same company that rebuilt 😉 the RNHF Sea Fury Centaurous had been or was going to be contracted to rebuilt the Sabre for the V….. 😮

Stringbag,
Paul Stone certainly did the right thing, by being lucky enough to be selected to fly it at Biggin Hill…….However, he certainly wasn’t flying the Sea Fury at Duxford…….
Dave Mackay was the pilot for the Duxford show, and I heard that it was a prec landing due to ‘a minor snag’, which was subsequently found to be not a problem after an air test….
Better on the ground than in the air with a problem, especially in an aeroplane that doesn’t glide too well.
Alls well that ends well
