Rob 68 Cosford show

Eventually got round to putting a few Cosford pics on line. Ive only just brought a digital SLR (christmas) and went with Minolta as i would be able to use the lenses that id got for my film Minolta.
Ive noticed however that on a lot of my flyng shots that i am getting a out of focus effect (see flying Spit). Would any one comment if they think its because of useing an old lens, may be 10 years old and if the extra expence is worth it?

About 30 seconds a photo – download – load into PS Pro – apply unsharp mask – check – apply again if necessary – save – upload

FYI my standard unsharp mask settings are:

Radius 1.30 Strength: 50 Clipping: 2

These are very conservative settings – it is better to apply a little at a time repeatedly – than use higher settings. If I have to apply a number of times to achieve sharpness, while keeping the photo noise free, I’ll reduce the strength to 30 or 25. Try to avoid whitening around the edges of objects and straight lines becoming jagged.

Also, make sharpening the last thing you do – after any other retouching, resizing, cropping or adjusting you might think necessary.

RobAnt, no dont mind at all. Def can see a difference, especially in the flying shot. How long did this take to do?

I don’t think they’re out of focus, they just need sharpening.

I hope you don’t mind, I’ve taken the liberty of sharpening the spit pics.

This is normal when it comes to displaying digital pics on a computer monitor – printed you probably wouldn’t see the problem at all.

Almost every digital photo I’ve ever taken has needed sharpening, I just apply a little “unsharp” mask using my photo editing software (PS Pro 7 in my case).

iv’e got a sigma 70-300 thats 6 months old and it gives me soft edges at the full 300mm, what we really need is a 2.8 70-300mm i think thats the only real way to get really sharp edges at that magnification, but were talking serious cash for one of those!!!

Would the soft edges come from an old lens and are they better now?

It could be that at full zoom the optics are a little on the soft side at the edges. Another thing you could try is to use the manual setting on your camera rather than Tv mode. As I tend to set the apature to F8 and no lower as this will make the aircraft sharper from prop to tail.

Hope this is of some help to you
